About the Belmont Stakes

The Belmont Stakes is an annual American Grade I stakes Thoroughbred horse race held every June at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York. The race takes place in a 1.5-mile-long (2.4 km) track and is open to three-year-old Thoroughbreds. The race, known in many circles as “The Test of the Champion”, is the third and final leg of the Triple Crown and is held five weeks after the Kentucky Derby and three weeks after the Preakness Stakes, on a Saturday between June 5 and June 11. The historic and record breaking 147th Belmont Stakes took place on Saturday, June 6, 2015. American Pharoah won the race, becoming the 12th horse in history to win the Triple Crown and the first in 37 years.
