PGA Championship Top Picks: Scottie Scheffler, Jon Rahm Favorites

The 2023 PGA Championship is underway at Oak Hill East Course in upstate New York, as the major is now a May event instead of an August one. In the early going, dark horses Ryan Fox (+25000 to win) and Sahith Theegala (+9000) share the lead at -2, with Fox having finished 13 holes and Theegala have finished 12. We still have a long way to go until the presentation of the Wanamaker Trophy to the tournament winner in the dusk on Sunday, so let’s take a look at the Golf betting odds for the contenders (those with +10000 odds or better of winning) as well as some course insights and some suggestions for you to consider on your wager cards.

This is a long course, so your champion will likely be someone who can pound the ball off the tee without getting into trouble. The course only has two par-5s, both of which run more than 615 yards. Three of the par-4s push 500 yards, and seven of them in total run over 450. There are four par-3s, including a 230-yarder and a 245-yarder. The bunkers are sparse in number (78), but most of them are deep gashes in the fairways or right around the greens. The course starts with a 460-yard par-4 with an OB line down the right and three fairway bunkers on the left. Allens Creek comes into play at the 360-yard mark, forcing players to choose to play aggressively or cautiously.

Jon Rahm

is one of the longest hitters on Tour, and as we’ve seen over the last few years, just about every other part of his game is also elite – and he knows how to finish majors now.

Brooks Koepka

looked solid at the Masters, showing both focus and physical health. He has four wins at the PGA and U.S. Open combined, and both of these tournaments tend to take place on courses that reward driving distance and a willingness to take risks and come through.

Xander Schauffele

isn’t among the biggest bombers on the Tour, but as he showed at Quail Hollow a couple weeks ago, he has the length to stay in contention. The rest of his game matches nicely with Oak Hill, as he ranks fifth on the Tour in Strokes Gained: Approach.

Patrick Cantlay

will play a major with new caddie Joe LaCava for the first time. He was already ranked fourth without LaCava, and a new caddie might have made all the difference at the Masters, where Cantlay fell off the table on Sunday to finish T14. Cantlay is ninth on Tour in bogey avoidance and top 20 in both driving accuracy and distance.

Justin Thomas

won the PGA a year ago, but things haven’t been as impressive this year, as he has fallen out of the world’s top ten rankings. He did look decent at the Wells Fargo Championship, but that putting has to improve for him to win.

Sungjae Im

finished T8 at Wells Fargo, T7 at the RBC Heritage, T16 at the Masters and T6 at THE PLAYERS. He took a week to play on the Korean Tour last year and won the event. Im is a very accurate driver, even though his length is not elite. He does rank 12th on the Tour in bogey avoidance.
