Premier League Rundown for the Season
Every season in the English Premier League, we get to witness three very distinct battles. It all begins with the race for the title, after which we have the teams competing for the European places. At the other end of the table, we have the teams fighting to stay alive and avoid the drop. Since the 2026-27 season has just begun, now seems like the perfect time to start making some predictions, so let’s get to it.
Who Are the Title Contenders?
You have to start this conversation by talking about the defending champions, Arsenal. While their biggest contenders have all undergone managerial changes, Arsenal still has Mikel Arteta at the helm. There is something to be said for stability and consistency, and the Gunners have looked solid through the opening 2 weeks, winning both games without conceding a goal. For me, Arsenal are the favorites until someone comes along who looks to have the caliber to knock them off the top.
If we are going to talk about the biggest contenders, you have to go with Manchester City. Yes, the Pep era is over, and Rodri has moved on, but City has spent a small fortune rebuilding their midfield. Let’s also not forget that they still have arguably the best striker in the world up front.
Behind those two, I would maybe look at Liverpool and Chelsea. Liverpool has not looked particularly great through the opening couple of games, but this is a long season. Chelsea are scoring goals for fun, but they also look shaky in defense. If they can shore up their rearguard, they could be a dark horse threat.
The Race for European Places
This, for me, is where things are particularly interesting, as I think there is a good chance that we might well see some surprises in the top 7 spots. We have already mentioned the 4 teams that we like to challenge for the title, although I am still not totally convinced with Liverpool or Chelsea. I would also put Manchester United in this mix. While their transfer window was pretty underwhelming, they do have a squad good enough to get them into the top 5 and a potential Champions League spot.
Now, ordinarily, I would have Aston Villa and Newcastle in the next group of teams chasing the lesser European tournaments, but both of those teams have had to sell to stay within the financial rules. Newcastle has made a decent start, but you have to wonder if they can hang around. Everton might be one to look at, and perhaps even Brentford, who have also made a solid start. The battle for European places might well be the most intriguing story of the coming season.

Who Could Be Relegated?
When you talk about relegation, you immediately need to add the newly promoted teams into the conversation. Hull has opened the season with a pair of wins, so you have to wonder if they can do something similar to what Sunderland did last year. For me, Ipswich and Coventry don’t look good enough to hang with the big boys, so they need to be in the relegation conversation.
If I were to name a couple of teams that might get sucked into a relegation battle, just as Spurs and West Ham did last season, I think the most likely might be Fulham and Sunderland. It was a dream season for Sunderland last year in their first season back in the top flight, but that level of magic is tough to maintain. I am taking Fulham, Ipswich, and Coventry to go down.

With only 2 weeks of the season played, it is perhaps a little too early to be making bold predictions. That said, Arsenal have already shown why they should be considered the team to beat.
Manchester City have the quality to push them all the way, while Liverpool and Chelsea could still find their rhythm as the season develops. Further down the table, the race for European places should be extremely competitive, while the newly promoted teams face an uphill battle to survive.
For me, Arsenal are the early pick to win the 2026-27 Premier League, while Fulham, Ipswich, and Coventry are my picks for relegation.
