MLB Odds to Win the World Series: Week 24

Written by on September 22, 2023

The Toronto Blue Jays are locked in a battle with the Texas Rangers, Houston Astros, and the Seattle Mariners for one of the three wild-card playoff spots in the American League. One of their stars, Vladimir Guerrero Jr, was scratched from the team lineup on Wednesday night due to discomfort in his right knee. Guerrero ended up having an MRI during the team’s 6-1 win over the Yankees, and the team will get the results on Thursday. In his last action, on Tuesday night, he went 0 for 5 in a 7-1 win over the Yankees, and he was removed in the ninth inning for a pinch-runner after getting on base due to an error. We will see how the news comes back from Guerrero. In the meantime, let’s review this week’s updated MLB World Series Odds for each team remaining in contention, as well as some insights about some of the top teams to consider in your MLB betting.

The Atlanta Braves clinched the National League East title…and then got swept by the lowly Miami Marlins, giving the Baltimore Orioles a chance to pass them and get the best overall record, and home field advantage in a potential World Series. Atlanta does get to play Washington seven times in their last 10 games, so they should be able to keep what is now a two-game lead over the O’s. A pitcher you will hear more about if the Braves make a deep postseason run is Spencer Strider, who has thrown 270 strikeouts, only six away from the franchise record that John Smoltz set in 1996, when he won the NL Cy Young Award. Strider has a 37.9% strikeout percentage, the second highest for any starter in a full season behind the 39.9% mark set by Gerrit Cole four years ago.

The Baltimore Orioles are moving Jack Flaherty to the bullpen as part of an experiment going into the postseason. John Means has returned to the rotation and looks ready to go deep in games; Flaherty has posted a 6.68 ERA since coming to the O’s at the trade deadline, and he wasn’t chewing up enough innings. He also has a 1.017 OPS allowed in the first inning this season, so moving him to the bullpen might take that pressure off.

The L.A. Dodgers clinched a NL West title on Saturday with 15 games left in the regular season. This was an impressive feat given that this was going to be a bit of a transition year in Chavez Ravine. Their bullpen had the fifth-highest ERA in MLB as of June 30, and their starting rotation has lacked depth due to injuries all year long, but the Dodgers keep winning. It helps, of course, that no one else in the West showed much interest in winning games in bunches.

The Philadelphia Phillies should have locked up the first wild-card slot in the National League, but they are struggling to win more than two games in a row. Michael Lorenzen has struggled so much as a starter that the Phils moved him to the bullpen. Zack Wheeler is the top starter right now, and Ranger Suarez has posted a 2.86 ERA over his last six starts (while walking 16 men in 34 ⅔ innings). Kyle Schwarber hit his 45th home run after slugging 46 a year ago. The last time a Philadelphia slugger posted at least two seasons in a row with 45 or more home runs, the hitter was Ryan Howard (2006-2009) and the Phillies went to the World Series in two of those years (2008 and 2009).
