French Open 2023 Update: Early Preview about Nadal's status and More

French Open 2023 Update: Early Preview about Nadal’s status and More

Written by on May 17, 2023

May 22 marks the start of qualifying for the 2023 French Open, when the top tennis players in the world will gather in Paris for the only clay-court major in the sport. Rafael Nadal is the defending men’s champion, but injuries have kept him from playing in any warm-up events at this point. Novak Djokovic would set a new record with a 23rd Grand Slam title with a victory at Roland Garros, but his own road to a title has been bumpy. At the Italian Open, he got upset when Cameron Norrie hit him with a ball on a point he had conceded and then got upset by seventh-seeded Holger Rune in the quarterfinals – his second consecutive loss to Rune. This means that Carlos Alcaraz, who defended his title at the Madrid Open and heads to Roland Garros ranked #1 in the world, has a terrific shot. On the women’s side, top-ranked Emma Raducanu is recovering from ankle and hand surgery and will miss the entire tournament. Read on for more information that may help you plan your tennis betting for the tournament.

What about Rafael Nadal?

Speculation has swirled around Nadal’s status, as the 36-year-old has not played since injuring his psoas four months ago. He had planned to return for the clay court season, but he has not been able to play at Monte Carlo, Barcelona, Madrid or Rome. he has won 14 of the last 18 men’s singles titles at Roland Garros, but his status remains up in the air. At this writing, we know that Nadal has set a press conference on Thursday, May 18, to address rumors. Nadal’s absence would leave a huge hole in the bracket, but even if he can play, the amount of rust he would have after so much time off might well keep him from making a deep run, let alone winning.

Who should we pick if Nadal can’t play?

Frankly, even if Nadal plays at Roland Garros, his chances at a title are far from likely, given his injury and time away from competition. Carlos Alcaraz made it to the quarterfinals in 2022, just his second year playing in the main draw. He beat the likes of Sebastian Korda and Karen Khachanov before losing to third-seeded Alexander Zverev. On clay, Alcaraz has won six ATP tournaments, including last year’s Madrid Open. He is currently the betting favorite with a +138 moneyline to take the title.

Novak Djokovic

won the 2023 Australian Open, taking his 10th career title at the first Grand Slam on the calendar. He has won at the French Open before, but only twice, thanks to the dominance of Nadal. In 2016, he needed four sets to oust Andy Murray, and he also won in 2021, stopping Nadal in the semifinals and coming from two sets down to stop Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final. If he can win, he would become just the sixth player in the Open era with at least three French Open titles.

Tsitsipas

is still waiting for his first Grand Slam title. He has made it to the final twice, but both times Djokovic stopped him from winning. These events included the aforementioned 2021 French Open and this year’s Australian Open. Tsitsipas did win the 2019 ATP Tour Finals, prevailing in a field that included Roger Federer, Dominic Thiem, Djokovic and Matteo Berrettini. He has two ATP Masters 1000 titles, both at Monte Carlo on the clay, in 2021 and 2022. This will be his seventh French Open; his career record at Roland Garros is 18-6. He lost in the fourth round last year, getting upset by Holger Rune.

On the women’s side,

Iga Swiatek

is the top seed and the defending singles champion. She is heavily favored, with Ons Jabeur and Coco Gauff the second and third betting choices. She has also struggled with injuries this spring but expects to be ready to compete. If you’re looking for some darker horses on the women’s side, one place to start is Elena Rybakina, the 2022 Wimbledon champion. She has found a style that allows her to dominate opponents, and she has stopped folding under pressure. She beat Swiatek at the Australian Open and went to the final at the Australian Open, Indian Wells, and Miami.
