MLS Futures Betting: Early Predictions for Supporters Shield & MLS Cup

We are just 7 weeks into the current MLS season, and with each team playing 34 games in total, there is still a lot of football to be played. That said, there are some early performances that might give some hints as to how the season might play out. With that in mind, it is time to pull out the crystal ball and look ahead to the rest of the season. As mentioned, though, it is very early, so keep in mind that injuries and other issues could change things dramatically. Let’s start things out by looking at both conferences, after which we will talk about the Supporters Shield and MLS Cup.

EASTERN CONFERENCE

All eyes are on Lionel Messi and Inter Miami, who will be looking to defend their crown this season. They are off to a slid enough start and are currently sitting 3rd in the Eastern Conference with 12 points. There are some legitimate concerns, though, as they have struggled defensively, surrendering 12 goals in 7 games. They scored 13, but this does not feel sustainable. Don’t be surprised if they make a move to shore things up at the back.

Nashville leads the way at the top of the table with 16 points, thanks in large part to an excellent balance between offense and defense. Nashville has scored 15 times and surrendered just 4. Chicago is second, but their lack of offense is a little concerning. Right now, Nashville looks like the most complete team in the East, but I would also keep an eye on NYCFC, who are sitting just off the pace in 5th.

WESTERN CONFERENCE

Over in the west, we have last season’s beaten finalist Vancouver leading the way. They have been totally dominant, scoring 19 times in 7 games, while giving up just 4 goals. It should ne noted, though, that they have only played on the road once to this point in the season, although they did win that one. You do have to wonder if a backlog of road trips might catch up to them as the season progresses.

I still think that the team to look at in the west is LAFC. They did not surrender a goal through their opening 6 games before losing 2-1 to Portland over the weekend. In fairness, that was a road game in one of the toughest spots to visit in the league, while also missing some key players. San Jose are also out to a good start, but I am not so sure they will stick around all the way to the finish.

SUPPORTERS SHIELD AND MLS CUP

If you were to ask me my opinion a month or so from now, my opinions may well have changed, but this is how I see things playing out right now. All eyes are on Messi and Miami, but I think the team we should be looking at is LAFC. To me, they look like the strongest team across the board, and I believe that they will end the season with the best record, which would mean winning the Supporters Shield. Now, as for the MLS Cup, I do think that we could be looking at a collision course between LAFC and Miami, with Vancouver the team most likely to upset that apple cart. I am taking LAFC to win it all this season, at least for now.
