Stanley Cup Odds and Betting Opportunities: Boston Bruins, Colorado Avalanche at the Top

Stanley Cup Odds and Betting Opportunities: Boston Bruins, Colorado Avalanche at the Top

Written by on April 12, 2023

The Boston Bruins have made NHL history once again, as they now hold the league record for wins and points in a single season. On Tuesday, the Bruins beat the Washington Capitals, 5-2, to reach 133 points (in the NHL, teams get two points for a win and one point for a loss in overtime or shootout). The previous record, 132, had stood since 1976-77, when the Montreal Canadiens set the mark. On Sunday, Boston had already set the new record for wins in a single season, with 63. It’s worth noting that, when the Canadiens set the record, teams received two points for a win and one point for a tie, which would come after five minutes of overtime following the third period. Overtime losses did not provide points for teams at that time. In the last 36 years, only eight teams with the most regular-season points went on to win the Stanley Cup, but the Bruins are still the top NHL betting favorite to win the title this year. Check out the updated odds as well as our thoughts on some of the contenders.

Edmonton

has had an elite offense for a few seasons now, but their defense and goaltending have betrayed them. This time around, Stuart Skinner has been playing in net like an elite goalie, and the Oilers brought in some solid defense at the trade deadline. They don’t offer a lot of value, but they are still a smart pick to end Canada’s Stanley Cup drought.

Colorado

is peaking at the perfect time, with seven victories in a row. It’s hard to win back-to-back Stanley Cups, given the grueling nature of the NHL regular season and four rounds of playoffs, but this looks like a team that could do it.

New Jersey

has benefited from the prodigious development of a young core led by Jack Hughes. Many experts in the sport thought that the Devils might compete for a wild card, but this team could win the Metropolitan Division and get to start the playoffs against a wild-card team instead.

Dallas

has long struggled with offensive depth, which meant that opposing teams could shut down the first line and then squeeze the life out of the Stars. Miro Heiskanen contributes offense as well from the blue line, and Jake Oettinger has emerged as an elite netminder.

Carolina

saw Max Pacioretty and Andrei Svechnikov, two of their top offensive stars, go down to injury late in the season, and they will remain on the shelf for the postseason. This means that the Hurricanes will rely on their depth to keep the scoring going. This can work, but it’s hard to sustain over four series.

The

Rangers

came into 2022-23 as a team that could go several rounds into the playoffs. At the trade deadline, they brought in Patrick Kane and Vladimir Tarasenko. It took a couple weeks for these players to find their rhythm in the Rangers’ offense, but now their scoring is even more dangerous, and goaltender Igor Shesterkin looks elite with the playoffs coming up.

Vegas

saw Mark Stone go down on January 31. He could return in time for the postseason, but shaking off the rust will be key. Even without him, the Golden Knights will enter the playoffs atop the Western Conference. How far can they go relying on depth to contribute offensively? We will see.

Toronto

is notorious for playing promising hockey and then cratering in the first round of the playoffs. They have solid offense, better-than-average goaltending and diligent defense. If they can finally get past the first round, that confidence might make them as dangerous on the ice as they are on paper.
