2020 Stanley Cup Odds – February 4th Edition

Written by on February 5, 2020

We’re a little more than 60 percent of the way through the 2019-20 National Hockey League regular season, which means that it’s time to take a look at the latest Stanley Cup odds. The Tampa Bay Lightning, as it seems they always have been for the last couple of seasons, are still the favorite. They have an outstanding roster on paper but have a way of folding at just the wrong time, as we saw when they were swept in the first round of the playoffs last year. There are some teams on the sports betting odds list that are underrated, like the Vancouver Canucks, who are working to pull away in the Pacific Division, and there are teams that are overrated, like Vegas (still banking on their Stanley Cup Final appearance in the franchise’s inaugural year) and Dallas (somehow listed at 12/1 despite an inability to put together consistent hockey for three periods in a row). Check out the latest NHL odds as well as our thoughts on some of the contenders.

Tampa Bay Lightning

Should the Tampa Bay Lightning really still be the favorites, given the ways in which they have folded in the last few postseasons? An old-school type coach might think so, but parity is the name of the game in the NHL, and it does not take much to shift momentum away from the favorite if the favorite has a sense of entitlement. However, the Lightning are starting to put up some impressive numbers as they sneak up on Boston in the Atlantic Division. Andrei Vasilevski put up a .948 save percentage and a 1.58 goals against average (GAA) in 10 January starts. No team has a higher scoring percentage during five-on-five play since December 1. They don’t offer much value now, but if they keep pushing, they will only offer less and less betting bang.

Las Vegas Golden Knights

The Vegas Golden Knights fired their head coach on January 15 and have been climbing the standings since then. Marc-Andre Fleury, Garret Sparks, Oscar Dansk and Malcolm Subban have been solid in their turns in goal, combining to post a .903 save percentage. Now that Fleury is back and healthy, though, he should take over the bulk of the netminding duties as the Golden Knights now start angling for playoff position in a division that is locked up tight.

Florida Panthers

An intriguing team that is a bit down the odds list is the Florida Panthers. It’s hard to imagine them moving into the top three in the Atlantic Division, so they will be pushing for a wild card slot in the Eastern Conference. Goalie Sergei Bobrovsky took his big contract and laid an egg for the Panthers in the early going, but he has come on; he did not win two Vezina Trophies as an accident.

Philadelphia Flyers

A young team that offers a ton of talent is the Philadelphia Flyers, the darkest of the dark horses on this list. The Flyers are tied with the Carolina Hurricanes for fifth place in the Metropolitan Division, but they are also tied for ninth in the league, ahead of Florida and Vegas, having posted 63 points through 52 games. Carolina has less than half the moneyline value that he Flyers offer, making them a smart pick at these odds.
