Why the Kansas City Chiefs Will Win the Super Bowl

Written by on December 7, 2021

The Kansas City Chiefs limped out to start the 2021 season, dropping two of three and four of their first seven. Since then, though, they have reeled off five wins in a row. In their first five games, they gave up a combined 163 points; in their seven games since then, they have only given up more than 17 points once. In their last two games, they have not permitted an offensive touchdown. The Chiefs’ defense has arrived, even as their offense has struggled to meet its electric output from the last two years. Are the Chiefs a Super Bowl contender? Right now, the only team that seems ready to stand in their way is the retooled New England Patriots, as the AFC North has transformed from an intriguing foursome of contenders to four teams that, depending on the week, don’t really seem to want to win, the Buffalo Bills have forgotten how to defend the run, and the Tennessee Titans can’t get out of their own way in terms of ball security.

As you consider your online NFL betting on futures, here is why Kansas City will win its second Super Bowl in three years.

NFL News: Why the Kansas City Chiefs Will Win the Super Bowl

Patrick Mahomes Delivers Victories

As long as Patrick Mahomes has been the Chiefs’ starting quarterback, he has delivered success unprecedented since before the merger between the AFL and the NFL. In his first year as the starter, he took the Chiefs to the AFC Championship, where they hosted the New England Patriots and lost in overtime. He took the Chiefs to the Super Bowl the next two seasons, winning one before losing to Tampa Bay last season. During that Super Bowl title run, the Chiefs trailed by double digits in each of their playoff games, but they came back to win each one – the first team in NFL history ever to do that in three consecutive postseason games in the same season. Mahomes started 2021 slowly, as teams were using two safeties high and refusing to blitz. For several weeks, Mahomes kept trying to force deep balls, but when he adjusted to a more measured game, the Chiefs’ offense starting clicking again.

The Chiefs’ Defense has Emerged as Competitive

This is not a defense with star-studded players, such as the Los Angeles Rams, who have Aaron Donald and Von Miller. However, this group has put together a considerable run, most recently limiting both the Dallas Cowboys and the Denver Broncos (both teams with winning records) to nine points apiece in their last two games. The Cowboys have an offense that, at least on paper, can move the ball up and down the field quickly, but the Chiefs were able to clog up the running game and pressure Dak Prescott, and so Dallas lost. Denver is another team that had a lot of success in the first half of the season, but the Chiefs’ defense was able to slow them down. Chris Jones and Tyrann Mathieu are the two big playmakers on defense for Kansas City, but the real strength is the unit. Steve Spagnuolo has distinguished himself as an elite defensive coordinator, and his schemes have had the Chiefs in the right place at the right time.

The Offense still has not yet its Ceiling

Despite all of the team’s struggles, the Chiefs lead the AFC West with an 8-4 record. That puts them a half-game behind the New England Patriots in the race for the top seed, and the team still could get more productivity out of its offense. Now that defenses have figured out how to slow down the Chiefs’ quick-strike offense, pushing them to mount sustained drives, the team needs to figure out how to get the ball to Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce with more regularity – and how to get Mercole Hardman more involved. Clyde Edwards-Helaire’s return to the running game will provide balance, and as these factors begin to improve, so should the Chiefs’ scoring numbers.
