MLB Odds in Week 21 for Top Games in Weekend

Written by on September 1, 2023

MLB Top Betting Games: Before the 2023 MLB season started, the San Diego Padres had visions of playing in the World Series. They advanced to the National League Championship Series last year, but it doesn’t look like the Padres will be going to the postseason at all right now. They are 62-72 and trail the last wild card spot in the National League by 7 ½ games. Ironically, the Padres have a +54 run differential, a fact perhaps explained by their 0-11 record in extra-inning games. They are the first team since 1969 to lose their first 11 extra-inning contests. The Montreal Expos did the Padres one game even worse, going 0-12 in extra-inning games that year. Time is ticking for the Padres to play up to their talent level – will they start against the Giants? Check out our three primo MLB betting picks for this weekend.

MLB Top Betting Games for the Weekend at the Week 21

» August 19-20, 2023

Minnesota Twins vs Texas Rangers

When: Friday, September 1 at 8:05 pm ET
Where: Globe Life Field, Arlington, TX
TV/Streaming: MLB.tv
Projected Pitching Matchup: Joe Ryan (9-8, 4.33 ERA) (MIN) vs Max Scherzer (12-5, 3.71 ERA) (TEX)

Joe Ryan just saw the Rangers on Saturday, throwing five innings and permitting one run on a solo home run among five hits and a pair of walks, striking out seven. The Rangers got to the Twins’ bullpen and won, 6-2. That was Ryan’s best start since six innings of shutout ball against Boston on June 22; since then, he had given up at least four earned runs in five of seven starts.

Max Scherzer went seven innings in that win over Minnesota on Saturday, allowing a pair of runs on four hits and a walk, striking out ten. The Rangers didn’t mount their comeback until after Scherzer left the game, so he didn’t get the decision. In five starts since coming to Texas from the Mets, he has a 3-1 record and a 2.64 ERA. Rangers to win.

MLB Top Betting Games | Tampa Bay Rays vs Cleveland Guardians

When: Saturday, September 2 at 6:10 pm ET
Where: Progressive Field, Cleveland, OH
TV/Streaming: MLB.tv
Projected Pitching Matchup: Zack Littell (3-4, 4.45 ERA) (TB) vs Logan Allen (6-7, 3.61 ERA) (CLE)

Zack Littell moved from the Rays’ bullpen to the starting rotation on July 30, when he picked up a win over the Houston Astros. In his first two starts, he only allowed two earned runs over 11 combined innings in wins over Houston and Detroit, but things have gotten bumpy since then. In his last two starts, he has allowed eight earned runs on 11 hits, including four home runs, striking out 10 and walking two, over 11 ⅓ combined innings. The Rays have won both games, but they’ve had to score 19 runs to do it.

Logan Allen got blasted by Toronto his last time out, giving up five runs on six hits, including a home run, striking out two and walking one over four innings in an 8-3 loss. Before that, though, his August numbers had been solid: 23 IP (4 starts), 4 ER, 16 H, 20 K, 12 BB. The team only scored one run combined in losses to Toronto and Detroit, but his pitching was solid. Can he hold down that Tampa Bay offense long enough for the Guardians to get to Littell? Rays to win.

MLB Top Betting Games | San Francisco Giants vs San Diego Padres

When: Saturday, September 1 at 8:40 pm ET
Where: Globe Life Field, Arlington, TX
TV/Streaming: MLB.tv
Projected Pitching Matchup: Kyle Harrison (1-0, 1.86 ERA) (SF) vs Blake Snell (11-9, 2.60 ERA) (SD)

Kyle Harrison made his Major League debut on August 22 in Philadelphia, and things didn’t go so well as he allowed a pair of runs on five hits over 3 ⅓ innings. In his home debut, on Monday against Cincinnati, he was terrific, fanning 11 and scattering three hits and a pair of walks over 6 ⅓ innings on a 4-1 win. Manager Gabe Kapler called his day “historic” and “about as electric a performance by a pitcher as we’ve seen since I’ve been here in San Francisco.” What will he do in his third start?

Blake Snell looked like his Cy Young self in June (3-1, 0.87 ERA) and July (4-1, 0.56 ERA). August started off a little rough by his standards, but he still only allowed 10 runs in 23 combined innings. On Monday, he blanked the Cardinals over seven innings, scattering two hits and five walks while striking out nine in a 4-1 Padres win. If the rest of the staff pitches like Snell, this is a team that can still catch fire – but it has to do it in a hurry. Padres to win.
