NCAA Football Odds: LSU Tigers vs Florida State Seminoles, Week 1

NCAA Football Odds: LSU Tigers vs Florida State Seminoles, Week 1

Week 1 of the 2023 college football season offers NCAA Football Odds fpr this terrific matchup between SEC and ACC powers as LSU squares off with Florida State at Camping World Stadium in Orlando. The Tigers went 10-4 last year, winning the SEC West title after stopping Alabama in overtime. They lost to Georgia in the SEC Championship but rebounded nicely with a 63-7 shellacking of Purdue in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl – also at Camping World Stadium. The Seminoles are on a lot of short lists for College Football Playoff berths – assuming they can win the ACC. A win over LSU would be a huge statement, and the Seminoles already beat the Tigers in Baton Rouge to open last season. Which team will win? Don’t miss our college football betting preview.

Why should you bet on the Tigers?

Quarterback Jayden Daniels is back after leading the team in rushing last year with 885 yards and 11 scores on the ground. The Tigers need to prioritize running the ball with tailbacks more this year as Daniels was the only Tiger with over 100 carries in 2022. Josh williams (532 yards, 5.5 yards per carry), Notre Dame transfer Logan Diggs (820 yards, 5.0 ypc) and Noah Cain (409 yards, 5.4 ypc) all have the speed and strength to shoulder more the load. Last year’s top wide receiver, Malik Nabers (72 catches for 1,107 yards), is back, as are Brian Thomas (31 catches, 5 TD) and tight end Mason Taylor (414 yards, 3 TD).

On defense, the Tigers struggled last year, permitting 31 or more points in five of their seven conference games. They had a harder time getting to the quarterback and stopping the run than they should have, but they enter 2023 with more talent. Mason Smith, Jordan Jefferson, and Mekhi Wingo lead the defensive tackle group and should clog up the run game and push the O-line back. Harold Perkins, Greg Penn, and Omar Speights, who transferred in from Oregon State, will lead the linebacker group. The secondary is the most questionable of the three levels, especially at cornerback, where SE Louisiana transfer Zy Alexander and Texas A&M transfer Denver Harris have lots of potential. Major Burns and Greg Brooks are the top safeties going into 2023.

Why should you put your money on the Seminoles?

LSU is just the first stop in a challenging season for the Seminoles. They head to Clemson in Week 4, and they finish with Miami (FL) and Florida in two of their last three regular-season games. They have to win at least three of those four to merit CFP consideration. Jordan Travis returns at quarterback after posting a 31:5 TD:INT ratio and throwing for 3,214 yards last season. Trey Benson led all rushers with 990 yards and nine touchdowns, averaging 6.4 yards per carry. The top wide receiver is junior Johnny Wilson, who picked up 897 receiving yards, scored five touchdowns and averaged 20.9 yards per catch. Jaheim Bell transferred in from South Carolina to play tight end and represents an elite talent. The O-line was solid last year but the team added some quality blockers through the transfer portal.

On defense, defensive end Jared Verse was projected to go in the first round of the NFL draft, but he opted to come back for another season. He had nine sacks and 17 tackles for loss in 2022, but he wants to build his resume even further so he can go in the top ten. Fabien Lovett and Braden Fiske, who transferred in from Western Michigan (where he posted six sacks last year), join him in the pass rush. The best level of the Seminole defense is in the secondary. Cornerbacks Renardo Green (58 tackles, five passes defensed) and Jarrian Jones (4 passes defensed and one pick) are back. Safety Akeem Dent (53 tackles, 4 passes defensed) also returns for a unit that needs to increase its takeaways.

Final Score and NCAAF Prediction

LSU has unfinished business at the national level after losing at home to the Seminoles last year. Both teams come in with visions of contending for a College Football Playoff spot, and while Florida State has an easier path through conference play, LSU has a more impressive collection of wins last year. I like the Tigers to win, 27-23.
