MLB 2022 World Series Odds: Records, Judge and Valdez

MLB 2022 World Series Odds: Records, Judge and Valdez

Written by on September 19, 2022

Two impressive statistical runs continue as the 2022 MLB regular season nears an end. In New York, Aaron Judge has slugged his 58th and 59th home runs, coming within two of the American League record of 61, set in 1961 by Roger Maris. The major league record, 73, is held by Barry Bonds, but he and the other sluggers who eclipsed 61 during the steroid era were all in the National League. Another interesting streak comes from Houston, where pitcher Framber Valdez has posted 25 consecutive quality starts, the longest ever in any single season. The streak is tied for third among streaks that stretch from one season to another. Valdez has posted a 15-4 record during this streak, which dates back to April 25. Let’s take a look at the latest sports betting odds for each team to win this year’s World Series, along with some insights that may help you as you plan your MLB wagering in the last few weeks of the season and in the playoffs.

The New York Mets and the Atlanta Braves will likely settle the National League East title when they meet in the next-to-last series of the regular season. Last week, both teams had frustrating series, as the Cubs swept the Mets at Citi Field, and the Giants took two of three from the Braves. Atlanta did get Ozzie Albies back from three months off with a fractured foot, but he broke a ring finger on a slide in his second game back, so he’s back on the injured list. He might return sometime this season, but rookie Vaughn Grissom is back in the spotlight. Grissom has done well since his major league debut, but he has started to cool off. Spencer Strider has also excelled in his rookie campaign, leading the majors in strikeouts (42) during the month of September. His pitching fWAR (1.4) in September also leads MLB; the next-best number is 1.0.

The Toronto Blue Jays are starting to heat up, winning seven series in a row going back to August, including winning three out of five from Tampa Bay last week. They moved into the top wild-card position in the American League, but the team faces consecutive series against Philadelphia, Tampa Bay and the Yankees. The Blue Jays are now just 5 ½ games back of the Yankees, thanks in large part to the bat of Bo Bichette. He has hit .440 since September 1, giving him an fWAR of 2.1. On the pitching staff, Alek Manoah has posted a 1.32 ERA over 41 innings during the last 30 days, the second-best mark in MLB. He has pitched 183 ⅔ innings this season, sixth-most in MLB, obliterating his career high.

The Cleveland Guardians saw a six-game winning streak end on Thursday, but that just concluded an 11-3 run over the preceding two weeks. They have a 6-1 record against the Minnesota Twins, almost ensuring them the tiebreaker should the teams finish with identical records. Shane Bieber has been a machine in the rotation posting 10 straight quality starts, with a 1.68 ERA during that stretch, pitching just under seven innings per start and striking out 8.2 batters for every batter he walks. However, the Guardians also have to hold off the White Sox to get out of the division.
