Muirfield underwent a major overhaul two years ago, so it’s important to consider the metrics that your betting picks need to excel in. Strokes Gained: Approach and Strokes Gained: Tee to Green are still important; in last year’s leaderboard, nine of the top 15 at the end were in the top 15 in Approach and 12 of them were in the top 15 in Tee to Green. Driving accuracy and distance were not as important. Putting counts, as seven of the top 15 on the leaderboards were also in the top 15 in Strokes Gained: Putting.

Scottie Scheffler

would have won both the PGA Championship and the Charles Schwab last week if his putting had even been serviceable, which shows you the quality of his game from tee to green. However, the putting let him down, and he missed out on both titles. He came in third at Muirfield in 2021.

Jon Rahm

has a win here in 2020 and had a six-shot lead here in 2021 but had to withdraw after 54 holes due to a positive COVID-19 test. A Rahm-Scheffler Sunday pairing would make for some exciting viewing.

Patrick Cantlay

is still looking for his first tournament win in 2023, as he has three top-fives. He has won at Muirfield twice, although one of those victories came after Rahm had to withdraw in 2021. He came in third here in 2022.

Xander Schauffele

started 2023 off poorly, but he’s been better recently. He came in fourth at the RBC Heritage and second at the Wells Fargo. At the Masters, he finished 10th, and he was 18th at the PGA. A problem for Schauffele here could be the par-3 holes; in his last 24 rounds, he is just 80th in this field in efficiency on par-3 holes from 200-225 yards.

Tyrrell Hatton

has played very well in the last two or three months, finishing in the top five four times as well as a T15 at the PGA Championship. In every important metric, he ranks in the top 15 in this field over his last 24 rounds. He has only played in this tournament once before, finishing T33 in 2019.

Rickie Fowler

has climbed to #46 in the world rankings after his sixth-place finish last week at the Charles Schwab. At the Memorial, he has three top-ten finishes and came in 11th in 2021. The long par-3s are also an issue for him, as he is not in the top 100 in this field (which only has 120 golfers) in efficiency for these types of holes.
