2020 Waste Management Phoenix Open Odds, Preview & Prediction

Written by on January 29, 2020

Scottsdale, Arizona, is the site of this week’s action on the PGA Tour, as TPC Scottsdale’s Stadium Course will host the Waste Management Phoenix Open. The course runs 7,261 yards, plays as a par 71 and has Bermuda grass on the greens. The defending champion is Rickie Fowler, and he will have such noted challengers as Justin Thomas, Tony Finau, Xander Schauffele, Jon Rahm and two-time champ Hideki Matsuyama.

While the course is about average with respect to difficulty, the last five holes can set up a dramatic conclusion, as you get a 470-yard par 4, a par 5, the par 3 16th with amphitheater seating, a par 4 that is just 317 yards (and therefore driveable to the green) and the 18th, 434 yards. These holes feature a good deal of water, so there are dangers waiting those atop the leaderboard.

As you make your sports betting choices, go for players who rank high in par 4 efficiency on holes between 450 and 500 yards, as there are seven of those on the course, as well as those who putt well on Bermuda grass. We have the contenders (+10000 odds and better) as well as Golf Betting suggestions for your perusal.

Xander Schauffele

He had a difficult time last week, missing the cut. However, it has been almost three years since he missed consecutive cuts. In his last four tournaments, he has two runner-up finishes and two top-10s.

Last year, he finished 10th at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, and he came in 17th here in 2018, so do not let the disappointing result last week keep you away from him, especially given the somewhat diluted field.

Matt Kuchar

He has a solid record at TPC Scottsdale since 2015. He has gained almost 4.5 strokes tee-to-green, and he has two top-five finishes and a top-ten in his last three tournaments here.

Over his last 20 rounds at this course, he ranks sixth in this field in strokes gained: putting. He did miss the cut at Hawaii’s Sony Open, but travel weariness could have contributed to that. His dominant form at TPC Scottsdale makes him a solid play.

Viktor Hovland

21st in this field in par 4 efficiency on holes between 450 and 500 yards, second in overall proximity, second in strokes gained: approach-the-green and 11th in birdies or better gained in this field over his last six tournaments.

The high number of spectators at this tournament makes it more of a festival-like atmosphere than some of the other tournaments, which might give energy to one of the younger players in the field.

This is Hovland’s first try at TPC Scottsdale, but a lack of exposure didn’t keep J.J. Spaun from cracking the top five in his first try at this course.

Byeong Hun An

A solid game — except for putting. In his last two tournaments, he has lost almost nine strokes on the green.

However, he gained 4.3 strokes with his putting at the Waste Management Phoenix Open in 2017, and in his last three tournaments at this course, he has averaged a 5.6 strokes gain in tee to green, so he offers some value as well.
