2018 Fort Worth Invitational Golf Betting Preview

The PGA remains in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex this weekend but moves west to Cowtown, with the Fort Worth Invitational (formerly known as the Colonial). The course is still the Colonial Country Club — and the winner still walks off with a red plaid jacket. A lot of the big names in the PGA are in Europe for the BMW Championship, giving some more wide-open odds — which would mean a larger payday if you pick right. This event is taking place for the 73rd time, and Ben Hogan still leads the pack with five championships — and he’s the only player with more than two wins. Check out our golf betting picks for this weekend’s action, which you can watch on the Golf Channel and CBS.

Jordan Spieth is available at +900 odds for this tournament. The field doesn’t have a lot of elite players in it — leaving him as the premier player entering. He has finished in the top 25 in seven of his last 10 tournaments, even though he really hasn’t challenged the top of the leaderboard. He finished second here in 2015 and won the whole thing in 2016, when he was still dominating the sport. On the Tour this year, he ranks second in greens in regulation percentage, seventh in birdie average and eighth in scoring average. So while he hasn’t played all that great lately, he is the best golfer in the field. Could this be a springboard to a big finish at the PGA? Zach Johnson offers +3500 odds — which makes sense, given the tough time he had at the Players Championship. However, he has been in the top 20 in two of his last three tournaments, and he has made every cut since the Northern Trust tournament in 2017. He won at the Colonial in 2010 and 2012 and still holds the tournament record score, at -21 over four days. Given that familiarity with this course, he is definitely someone you want to include with your wagers. Bryson DeChambeau also comes in with +3500 odds. He didn’t play at the AT&T Byron Nelson last week, but he has played elite golf lately, finishing in the top five at three of his last five tournaments. He ranks tenth on the tour in holes per eagle and 11th in virdie average. He played his college golf at Southern Methodist, over in Dallas, so this is part of his stomping grounds. DeChambeau only has one PGA Tour victory on his resume, but this is the sort of event that could give him a second trophy for the case. Jon Rahm brings +1400 odds, thanks in part to the inconsistency he has shown lately. In 2017, he went into a playoff at this tournament before falling to Kevin Kisner, and he said in a press conference that he enjoys the layout at the Colonial. Some thought that he would go to Europe for the major event on the continent, but the fact that he chose to stay here and play a course that makes him feel comfortable suggests that you should include him on your card. Ryan Palmer comes in with mammoth +6600 odds, which reflects the fact that he has missed three of four cuts. Before you cross his name off immediately, though, he did crack the top 25 at the Players Championship (the cut that he made in that stretch). At the Colonial, he has four top-15 finishes in his last six tournaments, which includes finishes in the top 5 in both 2012 and 2014. Those odds give you a considerable amount of value, especially when you combine that with his solid play on this course.
