2023 Wimbledon Top Matches to Bet

Written by on July 3, 2023

The first-round matches at Wimbledon are underway, which means that the sports betting focus in the world of tennis is on the action from London. In the men’s singles draw, the top three betting choices are Novak Djokovic (-160), Carlos Alcaraz (+350) and Daniil Medvedev (+1800), and then the value climbs significantly after that, as Stefanos Tsitsipas is the next betting choice at +5000. In the women’s singles draw, the top choice is Iga Swiatek (+275). After her come the defending champion, Elena Rybakina (+550) and Aryna Sabalenka (+550). The women’s draw is significantly less predictable because that side does not have a player as dominant as Djokovic is among the men.

Let’s look at three matchups for you to consider in your Wimbledon betting from the first round; all three matches are set for July 4.

Tennis News: Wimbledon Top Matches to Bet

Elena Rybakina vs Shelby Rogers | Women’s Singles

This pits the defending champion against a gritty American opponent who is going through a difficult patch in her career. The 30-year-old has now lost four straight matches and has fallen sharply from a career-high #30 WTA world rankings in 2022. Her last wins came at Abu Dhabi, where she advanced to the quarterfinals. Since then, she has lost in the first round of three straight tournaments, including a grass-court warmup at the Eastbourne International.

Rybakina made it to the finals of the Miami Open and the Australian Open, and she has won titles at Indian Wells and the Rome Masters. She is currently the third-ranked player in the world. Interestingly, Rogers and Rybakina have met five times, with Rogers winning twice, including the most recent matchup. This is their second time to meet at Wimbledon; Rybakina rolled the first time, 6-1, 6-4. Given Rogers’ recent form, another win for Rybakina is the smart pick. You can increase your payout by taking Rybakina to win in two sets.

Alexander Zverev vs Gijs Brouwer | Men’s Singles

Zverev, the 19th seed, takes on qualifier Gijs Brouwer in the opening round. Zverev missed most of 2022 due to injury but has seen his game gradually improve over the course of 2023. He made it to the semifinals of the French Open, where he fell to Casper Ruud in straight sets. He entered the Halle Open to prepare for the grass surface at Wimbledon and advanced to the semifinals with wins over Dominic Thiem, Denis Shapovalov, and Nicholas Jarry. Alexander Bublik stopped Zverev’s run in the semis in straight sets.

Brouwer took down Luca Pow, Jurij Rodionov, and Otto Virtanen, all in straight sets, to earn a spot in the main draw for the first time. In those three matches, he was only broken once; he has a strong serve that will do well on the grass. It’s worth noting that Wimbledon is the major where Zverev has historically performed the worst. He’s never made it past the fourth round, while Brouwer already has a win over a top-ten player in 2023. Advancing in a best-of-five format will make this an additional challenge; I like Zverev to win in four sets.

Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Dominic Thiem | Men’s Singles

The draw gives us an early intriguing match between fifth-ranked Stefanos Tsitsipas and Dominic Thiem, who won the U.S. Open in 2020. Tsitsipas has made it to the finals of the Australian Open and the Barcelona Open this year, but he lost both, falling to Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz, respectively. He made it to the quarterfinals at the French Open. His warmup tournament on grass, the Boss Open in Stuttgart, did not go so well, as he lost in the first round to Richard Gasquet in three sets. He has one win on grass in 2023, beating Gregoire Barrere, but his attempt to defend his Mallorca Open title ended in the first round.

Thiem finished 2022 well, but 2023 has not gone as smoothly. He went to the quarterfinals a couple of times during the clay season, but he went out in the first round of the Halle Open in his grass preparation, losing to Alexander Zverev in the opening round. Thiem has won five of the nine meetings with Tsitsipas all-time, although Tsitsipas won in their last meeting, needing three sets to stop Thiem at the 2023 Madrid Open. Tsitsipas is the heavy favorite and deservedly so given his better form this year. I like Tsitsipas to advance to the second round.
