ATP Delray Beach Open: Odds and Analysis for Favorites Matchups

Written by on February 14, 2023

The Delray Beach Open is part of the ATP World Tour 250 series, and this men’s professional tournament takes place on hard courts at Florida’s Delray Beach Tennis Center. Cameron Norrie of Great Britain is the defending champion, having needed tiebreakers in both sets to edge out American Reilly Opelka, who had been looking to make it two titles in three years. The tournament began on February 13 and will run until the 19th. Let’s break down some of the key matchups as you consider whether to add this event to your tennis betting for the week.

Tennis News: ATP Delray Beach Open – Singles Preview

J.J. Wolf vs Ilya Ivashka

When: Tuesday, February 14
Where: Delray Beach Tennis Center

Time: 12:00 PM ET
TV: Tennis Channel / TSN / beIN Sport

J.J. Wolf had a terrific run at the Dallas Open, where he rolled all the way to the semifinals before losing in a nailbiter to John Isner. Ivashka has not won any matches since October, with a six-match losing streak coming into Tuesday’s play. Opening with Wolf as his first opponent makes it much more likely that Ivashka will make it seven losses in seven matches. Wolf to win in two sets.

Christopher Eubanks vs Aleksandar Vukic

When: Tuesday, February 14
Where: Delray Beach Tennis Center

Time: 12:40 AM ET
TV: Tennis Channel / TSN / beIN Sport

These two met in the last qualifying round, and Eubanks advanced, 7-6, 1-6, 6-4. Vukic, though, beat Eubanks in straight sets back in November. Both of these players are strong on their first serve, and being on the hard court helped Eubanks get an edge in the qualifier. However, his form has not been as strong as Vukic’s coming into the tournament, so I’m taking Vukic to bounce back. Vukic to win in three sets.

Jack Sock vs Matija Pecotic

When: Tuesday, February 14
Where: Delray Beach Tennis Center

Time: 5:00 pm ET
TV: Tennis Channel / TSN / beIN Sport

Matija Pecotic had gotten away from full-time professional tennis altogether in recent years, pursuing a career in real estate. Pectoc had played his college tennis at Princeton and had made it to the qualifying draw as an alternate. However, the dismissals of Tennys Sandgren and Stefan Kozlov have given Pecotic a shot, and he starts with Jack Sock, who beat Ilya Ivashka in a marathon of a three-set match at the Dallas Open, only to fall to Taylor Fritz in the second round. Even so, Sock is a full-time player, so he should have the edge. Right? Sock to win in two sets.

Ben Shelton (-150) vs Marcos Giron (+120)

When: Tuesday, February 14
Where: Delray Beach Tennis Center

Time: 6:00 pm ET
TV: Tennis Channel / TSN / beIN Sport

Shelton is currently ranked 42nd on the ATP Tour and has the 8-seed in this tournament. He drew a lot of notice at the Australian Open, where he rolled to the quarterfinals in his first event outside the United States. Shelton has won almost 90% of his points on first serve this season.

His opponent, Marcos Giron, has more experience but is ranked 55th on the ATP Tour and is unseeded at this event. He made it to the quarterfinals of the Dallas Open, where Taylor Fritz beat him in three sets. Giron is much more easy to break than is Shelton; instead, he relies on a grinding, defensive style and his ability to break his opponent’s serve. Shelton has more power in his game, so Giron will hope to advance by pushing Shelton into making unforced errors. Given Shelton’s improvements in his game, particularly his dominance from the baseline, it is difficult to see Shelton faltering here. Shelton to win in two sets.
