Tiriac Open Betting Preview: Who Will Reign in Bucharest?

Tiriac Open Betting Preview: Who Will Reign in Bucharest?

Written by on April 15, 2024

Tennis ATP Odds: Monday marked the opening of the Tiriac Open, an outdoor ATP 250 tournament in Bucharest, Romania. The ATP 250 event is back after a hiatus that began in 2016. As an ATP 250 event, this won’t draw in the top names as they just finished the Monte-Carlo Masters this past weekend. At the Tiriac, the top seeds are the likes of Francisco Cerundolo and Adrian Mannarino. The only big name is Swiss veteran Stan Wawrinka, who looks to bounce back after his early bounce from Monte-Carlo. We’ll see Thiago Seyboth Wild, who beat both Karen Khachanov and Taylor Fritz in March and who already dispatched Lucas Nardi, best known for upsetting Novak Djokovic last month, in the first round here. Let’s break down this tournament as you plan your tennis ATP betting for the week.

Tennis ATP Odds Tiriac Open Preview: Round of 32 Matches for April 16

(7) Nuno Borges vs Stan Wawrinka

7:00 am ET | This will be the first meeting between these two players. Borges has won twice in his last five matches; at the Millennium Estoril Open two weeks ago (also a clay tournament), he made it to the quarterfinals, beating qualifier Loucas Pouille in three sets and stopping third-seeded Lorenzo Musetti in straight sets before falling to unseeded Cristian Garin, 2-6, 6-7. It is worth noting that the chair umpire made a ridiculous error early in the second set to favor Garin, giving him a point on a ball that a spectator called out but Garin and Borges continued to play. That came on a crucial break point, and while Borges could still have come back and won, it came at a poor time for him.

Wawrinka has won just once in his last five matches, back at the Grand Prix Hassan II, where he advanced to the round of 16 at that clay tournament. He beat Albert Ramos-Vinolas, 6-1, 6-4, in the third round before losing in three sets to seventh-seeded Mariano Navone. At Monte-Carlo, 11th-seed Alex De Minaur simply undressed Wawrinka, 6-3, 6-0. Borges to win in three sets.

Corentin Moutet vs Denis Shapovalov

6:30 am ET | Moutet and Shapovalov will meet for the first time early Tuesday. Moutet has won twice in his last five matches, but those two wins came in qualifying for Monte-Carlo. He beat Alex Michelsen and Daniel Altmaier, both in straight sets, to get to the second round, but there Alexei Popyrin stopped him in three sets. His best resent result came from the Movistar Chile Open, also a clay event, when he made it to the semifinals before losing to Alejandro Tabilo in three sets.

Shapovalov has also won twice in his last five matches. Those two wins came at the Miami Open, a hardcourt tournament, where he beat Luciano Darderi in three sets and Monte-Carlo champion Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets before losing to Matteo Arnaldi in the third round. At the U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship, though, Giron bounced him in the third round, 6-2, 7-5. Shapovalov to win in three sets.

Valentin Vacherot vs Marton Fucsovics

6:30 am ET | Vacherot and Fucsovics also clash for the first time at the Tiriac Open. Vacherot advanced to the qualifying final at the U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship before getting sent home in straight sets by Alexander Ritschard, 6-7, 6-7. He lost to ninth-seeded Grigor Dimitrov at Monte-Carlo in straight sets. In the qualifying rounds at the Tiriac Open, he beat Bogdan Pavel and Benjamin Bonzi, both in straight sets, to get a shot at Fucsovics.

Fucsovics has also won three times in his last five matches, but more of his wins have come in brackets instead of qualifying rounds. He beat Pedro Cachin and seventh-seeded Gael Monfils to get to the quarterfinals at the Millennium Estoril Open before falling to top-seeded Casper Ruud in straight sets. At the Miami Open, he beat Max Purcell in straight sets in the first round before falling to third-seeded Daniil Medvedev in straight sets in the second round. Fucsovics to win in straight sets.
