Top Tennis Betting Picks of the Week – July 2nd Edition

Written by on July 2, 2018

We’re still working our way through the early stages of Wimbledon this week, with the early part of this week featuring first-round play in the men’s and women’s draws. We’ve picked three matches for you to peruse as you put together your online betting wagers for this week’s action. Moving to the grass surface slows the game down slightly into more of a serve-and-volley game than what we saw on the clay courts, so take that into consideration as your tennis betting picks.

Top Tennis Betting Picks of the Week – July 2nd Edition

Tuesday, July 3

(4) Alexander Zverev vs James Duckworth (Round of 128) (7:45am ET)

Alexander Zverev enters Wimbledon with all sorts of momentum after a terrific clay season — but he did lose in the first round at Halle in a warmup tournament, winning just 59 percent of first serve points and a third of his second serve points. It could be that all of the recent deep runs in tournaments are wearing on him physically — and it’s important to remember that he is just twenty years old. He is 3-3 in his last six matches on grass, and despite that setback in Halle he has the mental and physical game to right the ship in the opening round here. James Duckworth has dealt with foot surgery and other injury woes over the last two years. He appeared in a pair of qualifying matches for the Australian Open, but other than that he has a lot of rust. He did take first place at the 2016 Toyota Challenger, but he has only made the second round of a Grand Slam three times since 2015 — and he has a five-match losing streak on grass. Zverev won the only head-to-head match between the two at the 2014 Helibronn II Challenger, prevailing in straight sets, and look for that to happen again here. Tennis Betting Prediction: Zverev wins in straight sets

(3) Garbine Muguruza vs Naomi Broady (Round of 128) (8:00 am ET)

Garbine Muguruza enters with the third seed on the women’s draw but has a record of just 1-1 when playing on grass in 2018 (although she has won eight of nine on grass). In her last match, she barely converted more than half of her first-serve points and just over a third of her second serve points. She has rolled to the quarters or further in three of her last six Grand Slam tournaments and has won 79 percent of her appearances at Wimbledon. Naomi Broady has dropped each of her last three matches, including a setback against Natalia Vikhlyantseva in which she lost 36 of 44 return points. Broady has never knocked off a player in the top ten world rankings and has only made the second round at a Grand Slam twice in her career. On grass, she has had an even rougher time, dropping four in a row. She and Muguruza have played once, back in 2011, and Muguruza won in straight sets — and I’m predicting the same. Tennis Betting Prediction: Muguruza wins in straight sets

Wednesday, July 4

(2) Caroline Wozniacki vs Ekaterina Makarova (Round of 64) (6:30 am ET)

Wozniacki took down Varvara Lepchenko in straight sets, needing just 15 games to get the win. She won almost 80 percent of her first serve points and two-thirds of her second serve points — and 59 percent of her return points. She only committed 10 unforced errors and was able to get off the court quickly, so she did not have to expend a lot of energy going into the next round. She now has won six straight matches on grass, and if she can keep her serving together, her defense and volley skills make her a natural contender here. Makarova needed three sets to get past Petra Martic in her opener. She won 73 percent of her first serve points but only 38 percent of her second serve points. She delivered 34 winners in the victory, but her unforced errors were too high — and she will lose to Wozniacki if she cannot improve her precision. She has made it to the third round in 14 of her last 15 Grand Slam appearances and has made it to the third round at Wimbledon each year since 2010, but Wozniacki could well be too tough, as she has won seven of the eight matches between the two and has won both of their matches on grass. Tennis Betting Prediction: Wozniacki wins in three sets
