China Calling: Formula 1 Betting Odds & Analysis for the Chinese Grand Prix

Formula 1 Betting: On Sunday the Shanghai International Circuit will host the 2024 Chinese Grand Prix in this week’s installment of Formula 1 racing. The U.S. broadcast will be carried in ESPN live starting at 3:00 am Eastern time. This is the fifth race on the 2024 slate and is the prelude to the United States Grand Prix, set for early May. Max Verstappen has three wins in four races in 2024, which is why he is the heavy favorite. The only other F1 driver to win a race in 2024 has been Carlos Sainz, who won the Australian Grand Prix, leading 58 of the laps. Let’s look at each driver’s sports betting odds to win and then some thoughts about different props for the race.

Formula 1 Betting Chinese Grand Prix Odds to Win

Interestingly, Shanghai is one of the few F1 courses where Verstappen still has not won. This has a lot to do with the fact that the Chinese Grand Prix has been on hiatus since 2019, which was before Red Bull basically took over the sport after the collapse of Mercedes.

You can also put down money on the fastest driver in qualifying. Verstappen is also the favorite to grab the pole, but the odds here are a little less daunting. Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc have run well in qualifying and have better odds to grab the pole than Verstappen’s Red Bull teammate, Sergio Perez. Lewis Hamilton still holds the lead among active drivers for most pole claimed in China (6), but Mercedes’ inability to develop a competitive vehicle has Hamilton well down the odds list for just about all of these props.

If you’re thinking about wagering on a podium finish, you should know that Red Bull has nailed down 1-2 finishes three times in four races, so Verstappen and Perez are the heavy favorites to get back on the podium. Sainz and Leclerc are right behind them with one podium position still available if those two take the top two again. The only driver not associated with Red Bull or Ferrari to make a podium in 2024 is Lando Norris (McLaren). So he’s listed after these first four, and there is a significant dropoff. The other McLaren driver, Oscar Piastri, and the Mercedes duo (Hamilton and George Russell) are the sixth and seventh betting choices, with significantly higher odds.

If you want a prop with tighter odds, then the top-six market might interest you. You can get the whole McLaren, Red Bull, Ferrari and Mercedes teams for odds that are fairly close. Verstappen is available at -1250 to finish in the top six, and even the Mercedes drivers are available at -167. However, there’s not a lot of value available that way. The biggest opportunities come in the fastest qualifying time and podium finishes. Until Ferrari and Mercedes figure out how to narrow the car performance gap, F1 betting is going to be a hard way to generate a lot of value.
