2019 US Open Men’s Quarterfinals Betting Preview

Written by on September 3, 2019

Only three of the top 12 seeds remain in the draw at the 2019 US Open Men’s Quarterfinals. Stan Wawrinka was playing terrific tennis but may still have been surprised to find himself up two sets against top-seeded Novak Djokovic. Djokovic would end up retiring during the third set due to an injured shoulder, and Wawrinka moved on to the round of eight. Daniil Medvedev, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are the last of the top 12 seeds to make it this far, as the men’s draw proved to be wide open. Check out our tennis betting thoughts for each of the four matchups remaining on the men’s side.

#23 Stan Wawrinka vs #5 Daniil Medvedev

Before you stack money on Wawrinka’s side here, remember that Djokovic was injured and had to retire. That doesn’t mean that Wawrinka is not playing well, as he has won seven of his last nine quarterfinal matches in Grand Slam play. This would be his fourth semifinal appearance at a U.S. Open if he can win — but he has not made a Grand Slam semifinal since the 2017 French Open. Wawrinka has beaten four top-ten players so far in 2019. Medvedev took down Dominik Koepfer in four sets in the round of 16, winning 75 percent of his first serve points and saving 10 of 14 break points. His dominant serve is a big player for him, as he hit 15 aces. He has a 10-match winning streak going on hardcourt, but he will likely be the villain in Tuesday’s match, as he drew boos with his impolite behavior during his round of 16 match and later trolled the crowd, saying that their catcalls spurred him to victory. US Open Men’s Quarterfinals Prediction: Wawrinka wins in five sets

#3 Roger Federer vs Grigori Dimitrov

Federer has looked dominant once again in this tournament; in his round of 16 match against David Goffin, he only lost four games en route to winning in straight sets. He won two-thirds of his receiving points, breaking Goffin’s serve nine different times. Federer won 82 percent of his own service games. With Djokovic out, Nadal is the only true elite name standing with Federer in the men’s draw. Dimitrov has played a terrific tournament so far — as one would expect to see when reading about an unseeded player making the quarterfinals. In the round of 16, he beat Alex de Minaur in straight sets, winning 70 percent of his service points, not yielding any breaks. He broke de Minaur three different times. Now he has a chance to make his first Grand Slam semifinal, but doing that against Federer is a tall order indeed. US Open Men’s Quarterfinals Prediction: Federer wins in four sets

#24 Matteo Berrettini vs #13 Gael Monfils

Berrettini took down a dangerous Andrey Rublev in straight sets, winning 84 percent of his first service points and converting on four of ten break points. This was his first win in straight sets since the second round of Wimbledon. In each of his four wins at the U.S. Open, Berrettini has hit 37 or more winners. If he can win, Berrettini would make his first Grand Slam semifinal. He has won four of five on hardcourt. Monfils also won in straight sets, needing only 23 games to eliminate Pablo Andujar-Alba. He won 75 percent of his service points and converted six of ten break points. He hit three-fourths of his first serves in play and did not face any break points. He has won three of his four matches at Flushing Meadows in straight sets. He has gone 2-6 lifetime in Grand Slam quarterfinal matches but has won eight of his last ten matches on hardcourt. US Open Men’s Quarterfinals Prediction: Monfils wins in five sets

#20 Diego Schwartzman vs #2 Rafael Nadal

Schwartzman looked impressive in his dismantling of Alexander Zverev in the round of 16, dropping the first set but then wearing down Zverev’s resolve over the next three to take the win. Schwartzman broke Zverev eight times, although he yielded five breaks of his own. He will need to serve better to have a chance with Nadal. Nadal needed four sets to eliminate Marin Cilic, the first real test Nadal had faced in this tournament. He won 88 percent of his service games and broke Cilic six times. Nadal is now the top-ranked player remaining in the men’s draw, and, given his form, he will be tough to beat — but he has looked human in both the round of 32 and round of 16 matches, at times. US Open Men’s Quarterfinals Prediction: Nadal wins in four sets
