NHL Playoffs Odds Predictions at Second Round: Hurricanes vs Devils, Stars vs Kraken

If you’re looking to include the Stanley Cup Playoffs in your Tuesday sports betting, there are two games on the schedule, one from each conference. The Carolina Hurricanes are in New Jersey for Game 4 with the Devils; the Hurricanes had taken a 2-0 series lead at home, but the Devils delivered an 8-4 thumping in Game 3. The Dallas Stars are up in Seattle for Game 4 with the Kraken; the two teams had split the first two contests in Dallas, and then the Kraken undressed the Stars, 7-2, in Game 3. Both the Devils and Stars face must-win situations to avoid being pushed to the brink of elimination. Check out our previews before you lock in your NHL betting.

NHL Betting News: Playoff Preview for May 9

Carolina Hurricanes (+135) at New Jersey Devils (-160) (O/U 5.5)

When: 7:00 pm ET
Where: Prudential Center, Newark, NJ
TV / Streaming: ESPN

In the first three games of this series, the Hurricanes have scored a total of 15 goals – including four in Game 3, so it’s not like the Devils really slowed Carolina down in their big win. The top two lines have gotten five goals and nine assists from Jordan Martinhook, Jesper Fast, and Seth Jarvis. Shayne Gostisbehere, Jaccob Slavin and Brett Pesce have combined to contribute a goal and five assists from the blue line. The problem, of course, is the defense, which collapsed in Game 3. Frederik Andersen has been inconsistent in the series, permitting six goals on 59 shots, and he had to give way to Pyotr Kochetkov in Game 3.

After just a paltry two goals combined in Games 1 and 2, the New Jersey offense found its stride in Game 3, lighting the lamp eight times. Jack Hughes, Dawson Mercer and Michael McLeod have scored a combined three goals and seven assists with the two scoring lines, and Luke Hughes and John Marino have contributed four assists from the point. If the Devils are going to make this a series, though, the defense has to show up. Vitek Vanecek has been the better of the two New Jersey goalies, but even he has permitted seven goals on just 51 shots. Devils to win.

Dallas Stars (-145) at Seattle Kraken (+120) (O/U 5.5)

When: 9:30 pm ET
Where: Climate Pledge Arena, Seattle, WA
TV / Streaming: ESPN

The Seattle Kraken have basically dominated two periods of this series: the first period of Game 1, when they scored four goals, and the second period of Game 3, when they scored five. The other periods have seen Dallas control the majority of the action. Joe Pavelski had four goals in Game 1, which the Stars would lose in overtime, but overall, the Stars’ offense has been very productive, putting up 10 goals in three games. From the checking lines, Tyler Seguin, Evgenii Dadonov and Mason Marchment have combined to score three goals and three assists. The defense needs Miro Heiskanen back; his injury in Game 3 led to the disastrous second period. Jake Oettinger was basically hung out to dry in Game 3 after a solid performance in the second and third periods of Game 1 and all of Game 2.

The Minnesota Wild also led Dallas, 2-1, going into Game 4 at home, but that was the game in which Dallas took control of the series. The Kraken have not gotten great goaltending out of Philipp Grubauer (10 goals on 98 shots), and they will need to improve the defense to keep a motivated Dallas team from pouring on the offense again. When the Kraken are opportunistic, they can do a lot of damage, but I see the Stars approaching this game with the proper amount of focus. Stars to win.
