What If the Super Bowl Were Next Week?

Written by on January 25, 2022

Four teams are left alive in the chase for the Vince Lombardi Trophy, but none of them are top seeds. In fact, we have a six-seed (San Francisco), a pair of two-seeds (Kansas City and Los Angeles) and a four-seed (Cincinnati) remaining. The 49ers won road games in Dallas and Green Bay to get a third shot at Los Angeles on Sunday – a team they’ve beaten six times in a row. The Bengals beat Las Vegas at home and then went to Tennessee and knocked off the Titans. The Rams razed the Cardinals in the wild card round and then barely survived Tampa Bay last week, seeing a 27-3 lead evaporate before winning, 30-27. The Chiefs doubled up Pittsburgh in the wild card round and then needed the luck of the coin flip to get the first overtime possession and beat Buffalo last week. Which Super Bowl pairing would be ideal – from a fan perspective and a NFL betting perspective? Check out our thoughts.

NFL News: What If the Super Bowl Were Next Week?

Los Angeles Rams vs Kansas City Chiefs

If this matchup (or the next one) took place, it would mark the second time a Super Bowl had been played in one of the teams’ home stadiums – and the first time happened just last year. This would be a rematch of a 2018 matchup at the Los Angeles Coliseum, which the Rams won, 54-51, in the highest scoring game ever on Monday Night Football. It was also the first time a team had scored at least 50 points in a game but failed to win. Jared Goff threw for 413 yards for the Rams, and Patrick Mahomes threw for 478, a career best. The game featured six lead changes, with four coming in the fourth period. With Stafford quarterbacking the Rams now, the yardage could be even higher. You’d definitely have to look at taking the “over.”

Los Angeles Rams vs Cincinnati Bengals

Two excellent young coaches would face off in this matchup, as Sean McVay is 35,while Zac Taylor is 38. Both quarterbacks were originally #1 overall picks in the draft – and both teams started out in Ohio, as the Rams were originally in Cleveland before heading west in 1946. The teams have only met 14 times, and the Bengals have won eight of those meetings. They last met in 2019, and the Rams prevailed, 24-10. That showdown actually took place in London, and Cooper Kupp wowed the Brits with seven receptions for 220 yards and a score.

San Francisco 49ers vs Kansas City Chiefs

These teams met in Super Bowl LIV, and the Chiefs won 31-20. One commonality is that Joe Montana led both the 49ers and the Chiefs to postseason berths. He had a lot more success with the 49ers, though. The teams have played 14 times, and each side has won seven games. I would expect the 49er pass rush to give Mahomes a difficult time, but Mahomes has dealt well with solid pass rushes in his career – when he has had a stout O-line, as he does this time.

San Francisco 49ers vs Cincinnati Bengals

This would make the third Super Bowl meeting between these two teams. The 49ers won in 1981 and 1988, although the combined margin of victory was just nine points. Nick Bosa, a D-lineman for the 49ers, played at Ohio State and was on the same team with Joe Burrow before Burrow transferred to LSU, and the two were friends. The teams met in Week 14 this season, and the 49ers picked up a key road win. Cincinnati trailed 20-6 in the fourth quarter but rumbled back to force overtime before falling. If the Bengals got off to a better start, this could be the more favorable matchup for them
