NFL Week 9: Arizona Cardinals at San Francisco 49ers Betting Preview and Lines

NFL Week 9: Arizona Cardinals at San Francisco 49ers Betting Preview and Lines

Written by on November 5, 2021

When this line opened, the San Francisco 49ers were one-point underdogs. In the days since, the 49ers have become slight favorites. This is truly odd, as the 49ers have dropped 10 of 11 at home, while the Cardinals come in at 7-1 after a fluky loss to Green Bay last week; if wide receiver A.J. Green had simply turned around to see if the ball was coming his way last Thursday, the Cards would be a perfect 8-0. Kyler Murray, the Arizona quarterback, is currently listed as questionable, but it looks like he will play. Arizona has covered in six of their last eight games against the Cardinals. Isn’t Arizona the easy sports betting pick?

Let’s take a closer look at the NFL betting odds and preview.

Why should you bet on the Cardinals?

Arizona has not only put together terrific wins this season, but some of those have been dominant. Really, they are just one mistake from having an unbeaten season at this point. San Francisco did unload offensively on Chicago last week, but the Bears’ defense has been taking on water lately, and Deebo Samuel took advantage to post some big plays. The Cardinals’ defense has been much more consistent, ranking seventh in the NFL in yards permitted per play.

The 49ers have only been an underdog once this season, and that was when they faced the Cardinals down in the desert. So far this year, though, San Francisco is just 2-5 against the spread. In home games, they are 0-3 against the spread and have lost those three games by a combined 21 points. For some reason, the sports books are giving San Francisco some undeserved love, and you can take advantage.

Why should you put your money on the 49ers?

San Francisco comes in at 3-4 and cannot afford to lose another game in the division if they want to remain a playoff contender. A seven-game home losing streak is not the sort of result that the 49ers will be able to post if they want to have a shot at snagging a wild card. In Week 5, Arizona beat San Francisco, but the Cards only scored 17 points, their lowest total in any game this year.

Arizona is 6-2 against the spread this season, with covers in five straight games, from Week 3 until Week 7. They would have gone 7-1 against the spread if they had scored that late touchdown against the Packers, and they have had 10 days of rest to recover and learn from that mistake. On the road, Arizona is 4-0 against the spread. These reasons make it extremely difficult to justify betting on the 49ers.

Final Score and Betting Prediction

The only reason to argue for a bet on the 49ers is the possible absence of Kyler Murray from the Cardinals’ lineup. He did miss the open session of practice on Wednesday, and he also missed Thursday’s practice. However, in an interview, he indicated that having four to five days off after that ankle injury against the Packers has helped him a lot. Currently, he is day to day. Reports indicate that the Cardinals’ quarterback suffered a medial ankle sprain, but it also sounds like he will take the field against San Francisco. I would not lock in a big bet on the Cards until the news on his ankle becomes more firm. With Murray in, I predict a final score of Cardinals 20, 49ers 13.
