It’s very hard to repeat as Super Bowl Champions, as the Kansas City Chiefs showed us last season. Their big problem in the title game was their O-line, and they addressed that in the off-season. Their defense was upgraded last year but now has some questions left to answer — but that was the story when they won Super Bowl LIV as well.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are the defending champs. All 22 starters are back, and O.J. Howard is healthy again. On paper, this is the best team in the league — but remember that they didn’t even win their division last season. They did get hot late, when it counted, but will they all have the same hunger?

Sure, Aaron Rodgers is back with the Green Bay Packers, but as we saw with his opening press conference, he is scornful of the organization, and that can erode chemistry in the locker room. The team added Randall Cobb as part of Rodgers’ demands to return, giving Davante Adams some help at wide receiver. The defense was solid last year — and remember that this is the team that came closest to beating Tampa Bay last postseason. I don’t see things going as smoothly this time.

The Baltimore Ravens are ranked ahead of the Cleveland Browns on just about every odds list and power rankings, but the Browns likely have the better roster, as they already had the better offense and have now upgraded their defense significantly. Is Baker Mayfield ready to lead a team to greatness? We could ask the same thing of Lamar Jackson, who has not achieved in the playoffs yet. This year, the Ravens’ secondary is elite, and if they can add pressure up front, they will be even tougher to beat.

The Buffalo Bills improved their offensive line, but they still need a cornerback to emerge opposite Tre’Davious White. If they can get a shutdown defense, then they have a lot easier time getting by the Chiefs in the playoffs.

The Tennessee Titans took a step toward an elite offense by getting Julio Jones in a trade. He will be running routes out there with A.J. Brown, and Derrick Henry will keep pounding the ball. The questions in Tennessee come on defense, as they had a difficult time getting stops last year.

Looking for some sleepers? The Washington Football Team already has an elite defense, and there are solid offensive weapons around new quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. I’m picking Washington to win the NFC East — and go further in the playoffs than a quiet wild card loss. The L.A. Chargers went out and got an O-line for Justin Herbert, who won Offensive Rookie of the Year despite running for his life most of the season. They already had a stout defense and have now upgraded at head coach.

How about a really dark horse? Let’s look at the Chicago Bears. Justin Fields has what it takes to become a franchise quarterback, so hopefully the team brings him out of Andy Dalton’s shadow sooner than later. The defense had a disappointing 2020, but play-caller Sean Desai is said to be ready to remedy that in 2021. If Rodgers regresses and the Vikings still can’t get out of their own way, this could become a very interesting season at Soldier Field.
