Super Bowl LVII Betting Odds for Eagles and Chiefs MVP’s

Written by on February 2, 2023

One of the more popular sports betting props involved with the Super Bowl each year involves the Most Valuable Player award. Once again, the two quarterbacks, Jalen Hurts and Patrick Mahomes, have opened as the two favorites, which only makes sense: quarterbacks have won 31 of the first 56 Super Bowl MVP trophies. The winning quarterback has also won the MVP in five of the last eight years. Last year’s winner, Cooper Kupp of the L.A. Rams, was just the eighth wide receiver ever to win the award, but his dominant performance against the Cincinnati Bengals earned him the nod. Let’s look at the Super Bowl odds list for this year’s matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles.

The NFL is a pass-first league these days, which explains the dominance of quarterback and wide receiver in recent years. The last time a Super Bowl MVP was not a quarterback, wide receiver or linebacker was in 2003, and the last time a linebacker won was 2016, when Von Miller took the trophy in what was an unusual year, as the Denver Broncos basically won a title in spite of their offense. Their quarterback, Peyton Manning, was clearly on the downward side of his trajectory as a passer, and he did just enough to keep the offense running.

This time around, if the Chiefs win the game, it will be hard to see them do it without heroics from Mahomes. Isiah Pacheco has emerged as more than a decent running back, but when Mahomes sprained his ankle in the divisional playoff against Jacksonville and the Jaguars were able to key on the run, the Chiefs basically stopped moving the ball. The exception was the 98-yard scoring drive that Chad Henne led as the backup quarterback, while Mahomes was getting treatment. Mahomes was able to do more damage against Cincinnati in the passing game, and with two weeks to let his ankle heal, he should be able to move the ball down the field.

Similarly, if the Eagles win, Jalen Hurts will likely have made big plays with his arm and his legs, damaging the Chiefs with big throws and big runs. Miles Sanders is the team’s top tailback, but neither Sanders nor Pacheco has established himself as an elite running back…yet.

Travis Kelce is an interesting play, because he tends to score touchdowns in bunches, which would line him up for an MVP nod if he can score two or three times. No tight end has ever won a Super Bowl MVP award, which would make the trophy historic. Given the fact that JuJu Smith-Schuster, Kadarius Toney and Mercole Hardman all went down to injury in the AFC Championship, even with two weeks to heal, Kelce (and Valdes-Scantling) could be the two healthiest choices to catch the ball down the field.
