NFL Odds & Overview for Each Game in Week 5

NFL Odds & Overview for Each Game in Week 5

Written by on October 5, 2021

Only one unbeaten team remains in the National Football League as we head into Week 5. The Arizona Cardinals defeated the Los Angeles Rams in a battle of 3-0 teams to make it a 4-0 start. The Las Vegas Raiders had a chance to equal the Cardinals at 4-0 but fell in Los Angeles to the Chargers on Monday night, 28-14.

Let’s take a look at each matchup from Week 5, with our NFL betting suggestions for each showdown.

NFL News: Odds & Overview for Each Game in Week 5

Thursday Night Football

L.A. Rams (-1.5) at Seattle Seahawks (O/U 54.5) (8:20 pm ET, FOX/NFL Network)
Seattle bounced back to 2-2, beating San Francisco, while the Rams got undressed by the Cardinals’ offense. Russell Wilson has the advantage of working with new offensive coordinator Shane Waldron, who came up under Rams coach Sean McVay. Matthew Stafford finally looked human against Arizona — while Wilson seems to be heating up. Seahawks to cover.

Sunday Games

N.Y. Jets (+3.5) vs Atlanta Falcons (43.5) (in London) (NFL Network, 9:30 am ET)
The Jets got their first win under coach Robert Saleh, who is instilling a tough defensive culture. The Falcons are still figuring things out for new coach Arthur Smith, but they have already uncovered a gem in Cordarrelle Patterson. Zach Wilson should torch another shoddy secondary. Jets to cover.

Sunday Games (1:00 pm ET)

Green Bay Packers (-3.5) at Cincinnati Bengals (49.5) (FOX)
The Packers will not have shutdown corner Jaire Alexander, and their pass rush also has injuries. That means the game will come down to Aaron Rodgers against Joe Burrow. The Packers have the better running game, but with Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins running routes for the Bengals, I like the upset pick, especially with that spread wider than a field goal. Bengals to cover.

Detroit Lions (+7.5) at Minnesota Vikings (49.5) (FOX)
Kirk Cousins likes to pick apart bad secondaries, and the Minnesota defense is starting to perk up. Jared Goff does not have many talented receivers to throw to in Detroit, so the Vikings should be able to shut down the Lions’ offense, and the Lions’ defense is starting to fill up the team’s Injured Reserve list. Vikings to win and cover.

Denver Broncos (+1.5) at Pittsburgh Steelers (40.5) (FOX)
Teddy Bridgewater had a concussion last week, so we might see Drew Lock again running the Denver offense. Pittsburgh is not getting much at all out of the passing game, so the offense is resting its hopes on rookie Najee Harris and the running game. I’m not putting any of my money on this game, but if you like it, I see Pittsburgh getting enough of a rebound to win. Steelers to win and cover.

Miami Dolphins (+10.5) at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (47.5) (CBS)
Jacoby Brissett, playing in relief of the injured Tua Tagovailoa, has put together a steady passing game. Miami might be able to put together a decent pass defense, so the Buccaneers will ride Leonard Fournette and Ronald Jones more, and they will rely on their defense to make big plays again this week. But is it enough to cover? Dolphins to cover, take the under.

New Orleans Saints (-1.5) at Washington Football Team (43.5) (CBS)
The question of which Jameis Winston will show up from week to week is now the Saints’ problem, as they just lost to the Giants at home. Winston is now taking turns with Taysom Hill at quarterback, which means that Alvin Kamara is the focus of the offense. Washington to cover.

Philadelphia Eagles (+3.5) at Carolina Panthers (45) (FOX)
Carolina should bounce back after a tough third quarter in Dallas, but Jalen Hurts has also been playing better than a 1-3 quarterback. Zach Ertz and Dallas Goedert should have opportunities to catch passes against the Panthers — but can Philadelphia stop the Carolina offense? Carolina to win and cover.

Tennessee Titans (-4.5) at Jacksonville Jaguars (48.5) (CBS)
The Titans have beaten Seattle and Minnesota…and lost to the Jets. Ryan Tannehill and the passing game basically disappeared, and the Titans’ secondary got torched by rookie Zach Wilson. Next up is a trip to Jacksonville, where the Jaguars play at home with extra rest (after playing last Thursday). Urban Meyer’s viral video with a young woman in a bar will likely erode his leadership even more after the Jaguars blew that big lead in Cincinnati. Titans to win and cover.

New England Patriots (-9.5) at Houston Texans (39.5) (CBS)
If Bill Belichick could find a way to limit the damage that Tom Brady’s offense could do against the Patriots last week, he certainly can find a way to shut down the Houston offense, which hung up a goose egg against Buffalo last week. Mac Jones should have a field day, and the Pats should roll. New England to win and cover.

Sunday Games (4:05 / 4:25 pm ET)

Chicago Bears (+5.5) at Las Vegas Raiders (45.5) (CBS)
Chicago’s defense was fairly stout against Detroit, but Las Vegas’ offense is much better than the Lions’ was. The Raiders’ defense stiffened in the second half against the Chargers, but it was too late, as the Chargers were already up 21-0. The Raiders should be able to rebound at home…but not cover. Bears to cover.

Cleveland Browns (-1) at L.A. Chargers (49.5) (CBS)
The Chargers have a hard time stopping the run, and the Browns have not one, but two, elite tailbacks, and they have the O-line to run all day long. Cleveland’s defense should be able to keep Justin Herbert under control. Browns to win and cover.

N.Y. Giants (+7.5) at Dallas Cowboys (50.5) (FOX)
The Giants went down to New Orleans and delivered a win against the Saints, as Daniel Jones looked terrific running the offense. The return of Saquon Barkley is taking the pressure off Jones to man the offense all by himself. However, Ezekiel Elliott looks like he did his rookie campaign, running all over the field, and Dak Prescott is playing the best football of his career. But can the Cowboys win by more than a touchdown? Giants to cover, take the over.

San Francisco 49ers (-4.5) at Arizona Cardinals (52.5) (FOX)
Trey Lance will start for the 49ers, and he will have to duel Kyler Murray, who is moving up the list of MVP candidates each week. Arizona’s defense should be able to get enough stops to pull away. Cardinals to win and cover.

Sunday Night Football

Buffalo Bills (+3) at Kansas City Chiefs (56.5) (NBC, 8:20 pm ET)
Kansas City is scoring plenty of points, as Patrick Mahomes has found his mojo with Tyreek Hill again, which means that Travis Kelce can’t be the sole focus of defenders anymore. The Chiefs got back to .500 last week with a win in Philadelphia. However, Buffalo’s offense is putting up points at will as well, as Josh Allen is playing the best ball of his career. Buffalo might be due for a cooldown, but this chance to avenge the loss to the Chiefs from last year’s AFC Championship won’t be the week. Bills to cover, take the over.

Monday Night Football

Indianapolis Colts (+7) at Baltimore Ravens (48) (ESPN, 8:15 pm ET)
Baltimore played another complete game in their win over Denver, showing their status as AFC contenders. The Colts will try to slow the game down with a running attack, but Baltimore is better on both sides of the ball right now. Ravens win and cover.
