Giants vs Patriots 2019 NFL Preseason Week 4 Spread & Prediction

Written by on August 27, 2019

There has really been one just fly in the ointment as far as domination of the National Football League has gone for the New England Patriots during the Bill Belichick-Tom Brady era, and that has been the New York Giants. The two teams have met twice in the Super Bowl, and the Giants have won both of them in upset fashion, including that win in 2007 that kept the Patriots from completing a perfect 19-0 season. Such moments as the “Helmet Catch” — which would be David Tyree’s very last catch as a pro football player — have emerged from this rivalry. The Giants and Patriots will play twice in 2019, in the preseason and again in Week 6. While the last week of the preseason is generally a parade of reserves, I would be surprised to see the Patriots take this game lightly. Check out our NFL betting preview of this preseason tilt.

Why should you bet on the Giants?

Daniel Jones has been announced as the starting signal caller in this game for the Giants, and despite the fact that the rookie from Duke enters the regular season as the backup, he has been terrific in the preseason. In Week 3 of the preseason, he went 9 for 11 for 141 yards against the Cincinnati Bengals, playing a key role in the Giants’ 25-23 win on the road. Eli Manning went just 4 for 8 for 41 yards; the superior performance that Jones has put in in the preseason has led to a call among the fan base to let Jones start. The other key for the Giants’ offense is tailback Saquon Barkley, but the Giants have made his load quite light in the preseason. The Giants have run 99 passing plays to just 79 rushing plays — and the line has not done much to open holes for the New York tailbacks, as they are averaging just over two yards per carry in the preseason. The Giants’ defense was particularly porous in 2018, but they have been adequate, at least as far as preseason levels go. If you like New York, you see a spirited Giants team taking a lot more interest in this outcome than the Patriots do.

Why should you put your money on the Patriots?

New England also has a rookie quarterback shining in the backup role in Jarrett Stidham. He went 15 for 19 for 134 yards in a 10-3 win over the Carolina Panthers. The most impressive part of Stidham’s performance was his ability to stand tall in the pocket in the middle of a swarm of pass rushers to bring accurate passes. Tom Brady also played in that game, going 8 for 12 for 75 yards, but he is unlikely to play in the preseason finale, so expect the duties to be shared between Stidham and Brian Hoyer. Nick Brossette was a pleasant surprise for New England, running the ball 14 times for 53 yards. He should serve as a nice complement for Sony Michel, who ran for 36 yards. New England ranks sixth in the league in rushing yards per game, picking up 128.3 yards per week, which could spell trouble for those thinking that a declining Tom Brady will mean a shriveling New England offense. The Patriots’ defense is also a solid factor, as opposing offenses have not been able to do much against New England in the preseason, no matter which unit is in the game.

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

New England playing at home? That’s an easy pick, especially against a Giants team that doesn’t really have much going as far as an established offense. Yes, New York is 3-0 in the preseason, but the Patriots are 3-0 as well, and they don’t like losing, especially to the Giants. Final Score Prediction: New England 20, New York 13
