College Football Power Rankings after Week 3

Written by on September 20, 2021

One interesting feature of the 2021 college football season so far is the close outcomes that the blue bloods of the sport have had to endure. Clemson barely escaped Georgia Tech, 14-8, in ACC play in Week 3. Alabama had a big early lead against Florida but held on to win by two when the Gators missed a two-point conversion late in the game. The “super senior” rule, expedited transfers and other factors leading to more available quality players than usual have increased parity to some degree — and you can take advantage in your online college football betting. Check out our updated power rankings from the college gridiron.

NCAA News: College Football Power Rankings after Week 3

#1 Alabama Crimson Tide (3-0)

Once again, Nick Saban was frustrated with an Alabama defense that did not put together a complete game, as a big Tide lead turned into a white-knuckle finish. The front seven on defense visibly wore down as the game went on, and Florida took advantage, particularly in the running game. The Alabama O-line was also inconsistent — and the team showed a lack of discipline at multiple times, leading to too many yellow flags. Ole Miss’ high-octane offense comes to town in two weeks, and this game could be a lot more interesting than it looked at the start of the season.

#2 Georgia Bulldogs (3-0)

J.T. Daniels returned to lead the offense against South Carolina, and he threw for 303 yards and three scores in a 40-13 laugher. Stetson Bennett filled in for Daniels the week before against UAB and threw five touchdown passes to tie a school record. The Georgia defense was terrific against South Carolina, as the Bulldogs have their fairly easy schedule ahead of them to get to a likely SEC Championship, unless Florida has something to say about it.

#3 Iowa Hawkeyes (3-0)

Iowa picked up 440 yards and dropped 30 points on Kent State, but the defense was even more impressive, as they totaled seven sacks of Golden Flashes signal-caller Dustin Crum. Tyler Goodson ran for 153 yards, and the offense was steady and consistent, with a touchdown in each quarter. This is a quiet CFP contender, but it’s a long way to the Big Ten Championship.

#4 Oregon Ducks (3-0)

The offense took a while to get up and running, but they dusted Stony Brook, 48-7, to finish their non-conference play. Anthony Brown went 14 of 18 for 159 yards and a score, and both Ty Thompson and Jay Butterfield saw time running the offense as well. Stony Brook drove 75 yards for a touchdown on their first drive, but after that, the Oregon D only permitted 169 yards.

#5 Penn State Nittany Lions (3-0)

Penn State has two quality wins in the first three games, beating Wisconsin on the road and Auburn at home in close games. In the win over Auburn, Penn State quarterback went 28 of 32, with most of his best work going to Jahan Dotson, who had 78 receiving yards, including a 22 yard score. The Nittany Lion defense had a difficult time with Auburn’s running attack, but Arnold Ebiketie provided a spark with three quarterback hurries and five tackles.

#6 Cincinnati Bearcats (3-0)

The offense struggled against Indiana in the first half, as Desmond Ridder went just 10 of 19 for 94 yards and a pick. However, a late break in the first half helped the Bearcats close to within 14-7 late in the second quarter. In the second half, the Bearcats put up 28 points to come back for a 38-24 road.

#7 Texas A&M Aggies (3-0)

Texas A&M rolled to a 34-0 win in Week 3…against New Mexico. The Aggie defense held them to 122 total offensive yards, including 33 yards through the air. Tailback Isaiah Spiller scored a touchdown and broke the 100-yard barrier, and backup quarterback Zach Calzada threw for 275 yards and three scores.

#8 Oklahoma Sooners (3-0)
#9 Florida Gators (2-1)
#10 Clemson Tigers (2-1)
