NCAAF Championship Winner: Early Odds to Win the Title

One of the most shocking college football headlines of 2023 has been the contraction of the Pac-12 into the Pac-4, with Cal, Stanford, Oregon State, and Washington State left behind as the rest of the conference has fled to the Big 12 and the Big Ten. In the last Pac-12 season, though, you can expect lots of passing yards – and lots of scoring. The Pac-12 is filled with talented quarterbacks, led by USC signal-caller Caleb Williams, who will be the ninth quarterback to enter a college season as the reigning Heisman Trophy winner. However, Williams did not lead Power 5 quarterbacks in passing yards. That honor belonged to Michael Penix Jr of the Washington Huskies, who also returns this season. Penix has 60 career touchdown passes, but that’s just fifth among the Pac-12 starting quarterbacks this season. Cameron Ward of Washington State has thrown 94, and Shedeur Sanders of Colorado has thrown 70. Bo Nix of Oregon has 68, and Williams has 63. How much will this passing prowess help these teams’ sports betting odds of winning the national championship? Well, you can check the NCAAF Championship Winner odds list and see, and we’ll also look at some of the top contenders for this year’s title.

Why don’t big passing games translate into national championship odds? Because eventually defenses will catch up with offenses as you get higher up the ladder of competitive strength. If you don’t commit to defense and recruit speed and size on that side of the ball as well, you’ll end up getting outscored enough for the College Football Playoff to overlook you. Maybe the upcoming 12-team playoff will turn things out differently, but for now, with a four-team playoff, you can’t lose more than a game and expect to get a shot at a title, and that means having an elite defense – not really part of the equation in the Pac-12.

Can Georgia win three national championships in a row? That hasn’t happened since the Minnesota Golden Gophers pulled off the feat in from 1934-1936, but those years came before an at least somewhat unified national championship. Georgia has a cake walk through non-conference play (Ball State, Tennessee-Martin, UAB, and Georgia Tech). Their SEC road games are Auburn, Vanderbilt, and Tennessee. Carson Beck takes over at quarterback for Stetson Bennett IV, and if he can handle the load, the Bulldogs’ offense should be terrific again. The defense returns four of their top five tacklers from 2022.

What about Michigan? The Wolverines have won the Big Ten the past two years and made the national semifinals, only to get sent home before the final. Last year’s comedy of errors against TCU in CFP semifinals was another laughable performance from a Jim Harbaugh-coached team in the national spotlight, but the Wolverines have developed from a team that couldn’t beat Ohio State to a team that can – and can finish the job in the Big Ten Championship. J.J. McCarthy returns at quarterback, and tailbacks Blake Corum and Donovan Edwards return as well. The Wolverines start with such easy opponents as East Carolina, UNLV, Bowling Green, and Rutgers, although they finish with such sticky games as Penn State, Maryland, and Ohio State.

Can Ohio State get back on top of the Big Ten – or if they can’t, can they break through in the CFP? They had a lead on Georgia for much of their national semifinal last year, and they had a shot at the game-winning field goal. The Buckeyes’ defense must be better, as the losses to Michigan and Georgia showed. The front seven on defense is elite this season, with the real questions coming on offense with a new quarterback. One good stat for Buckeye fans – they have not lost three in a row to Michigan since 1997.
