They had the Cardinals down to their final strike in the ninth inning, and then again in the tenth, but the Cardinals got clutch hits in both innings and ended up taking Game 6. The Rangers grabbed an early lead in Game 7 but ended up losing. Now they lead the Arizona Diamondbacks, three games to one, going into Game 5 in the desert. The Rangers have set an MLB record with 10 straight road wins to start a postseason and would make it 11 if they win tonight. Now comes Nathan Eovaldi to start for the second time in this World Series. His postseason numbers in the wild-card, ALDS and ALCS were phenomenal, but he fell back to earth a bit in Game 1. He allowed five runs on six hits, including a home run, over 4 ⅔ innings in a game the Rangers came back and won in 11 innings. The Rangers have won nine of the last ten games that Eovaldi started overall. Relievers Josh Sborz and Aroldis Chapman are fresh after having Game 4 off, and Dane Dunning only had to throw one inning, while closer Jose Leclerc only faced two batters in Game 4.

FOX commentator John Smoltz spent much of Game 4 talking about the resilience of the Arizona Diamondbacks, and it is true that this team has taken on new life in the postseason. They snagged a wild card with a record of 84-78. They went to Milwaukee and won a wild-card series on the Brewers’ home field and then beat the team that won their division, the L.A. Dodgers, in the National League Division Series. They fell into an 0-2 series hole against the Philadelphia Phillies and were down 3-2 going into Game 6 in the NLCS, but they came back to get to the World Series. Their offense is opportunistic, as is their commitment to small ball. In their 10 playoff wins, they have stolen 17 bases.
Zac Gallen had an impressive regular season, posting a 17-9 record with a 3.47 ERA. The Diamondbacks have lost the last three games he started, though – both of his starts in the NLCS, in which he gave up nine runs on 14 hits, including five home runs, over 11 innings. In Game 1 against Texas, he permitted three runs on four hits while also walking four and striking out five.

Both of these teams have battled back from adversity multiple times. Corey Seager has been huge at the plate for Texas this postseason; his four hits in the World Series have included three home runs and a ground-rule double. Arizona’s Ketel Marte has a record-breaking 20-game postseason hitting streak going, and he had two hits last night. Arizona actually had more hits than Texas did despite losing Game 4, 11-7. I see Eovaldi getting back to his earlier postseason pitching form and handing the ball to the top part of the Rangers bullpen in a 5-3 win.
