With each passing week, the Atlanta Braves are looking more and more like the overwhelming favorite to win the 2023 World Series. They have MLB’s best record, and they just won a title in 2021. They lead the majors in home runs, on-base percentage, batting average, and OPS (on-base percentage plus slugging percentage). They are also first in pitching staff ERA and bullpen ERA. Ronald Acuna Jr is pushing toward the first-ever 30/60 season in MLB history (30 or more home runs and 60 or more stolen bases). It’s not just Acuna raking – seven different Braves have at least 20 more home runs. No other team has more than four players at that mark. If you look at the bottom third of the order (hitters 7-9), they lead MLB in slugging percentage, OPS and batting average. Spencer Strider has a 2.37 ERA in the month of August – and that’s including a disaster of an outing in Pittsburgh on August 7. His record for the month is 4-1, and in those four wins, he has allowed two runs over 27 ⅔ innings, allowing a dozen hits (but no home runs), striking out 32 while walking eight (just two walks in his last two outings). To say that Strider is warming up for the stretch run and the postseason may be an understatement.

Julio Urias also has a 4-1 record in the month of August, with a nice 2.90 ERA, but his off-putting start was the most recent one, as he allowed six runs on eight hits, including three home runs, in Boston. In his other four August starts, he has permitted four earned runs on 16 hits over 25 combined innings, striking out 27. Can he recover his form and shut down the Braves? Dodgers to win.

Max Fried was out from May 5 until August 4, and since he’s come back, he has posted a 3.58 ERA in five August starts. He did permit four runs in just four innings in Pittsburgh on August 9, but other than that start, he has finished six innings three times in four starts, permitting no more than three earned runs in any outing, and he has gotten the win in three of those games.

The Dodgers look set to make Saturday a spot starter or long relief committee day, so I would expect the Braves to jump all over the spot starter coming up for the day or do well finding offense against the assorted bullpen. Braves to win.

Bryce Elder (Braves) vs Bobby Miller (Dodgers)

The month of August has been a little rocky for Bryce Elder – a 3-2 record with a 4.88 ERA. His first two starts of the month saw him allow a dozen runs (10 earned) in 9 ⅓ combined innings of losses to the Cubs and the Pirates. The Rockies scored four runs on eight hits over six innings against him on Monday, but the offense exploded for 14 runs to stake him to the win. He did throw a gem against the Yankees on August 15 – 7.0 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 3 K, 3 BB.

Bobby Miller has a 2-1 record and a 3.21 ERA in the month of August, but his last two starts have been ominous. In starts against Cleveland and Arizona, he has allowed eight runs on 13 hits, including a pair of home runs, over 12 ⅓ innings. Can he keep the ball off the fat part of the plate against the Braves? Braves to win.

Charlie Morton (Braves) vs Clayton Kershaw (Dodgers)

Charlie Morton has won four starts in a row, lowering his ERA from 3.86 to 3.29 in the process. He did not allow a single earned run between August 6 and August 9, blanking the Mets (twice) and the Yankees over 18 combined innings. He allowed one run in Colorado on Tuesday over six innings.

Clayton Kershaw has not allowed more than two earned runs in a start since May 27. He has not allowed more than one earned run since June 14. His last four outings have all seen the offense score exactly one run. It looks like Kershaw is dialed in once again, and while we will wait to see what he produces in the off-season, he is giving the Dodgers exactly what they need. Dodgers to win.
