2019 MLB Regular Season Predictions for the Last Two Months

Written by on August 9, 2019

We have just about eight weeks left in the 2019 regular season for Major League Baseball, and we have several interesting trends left to track. Sure, it looks like the Yankees, Astros, Braves and Dodgers will win their respective divisions, with the National League and American League Central Divisions really the only ones still in play. However, there are a lot of other exciting parts of the season left to go. We have some predictions for you to consider as you put your MLB betting together for the rest of 2019.

2019 MLB Regular Season Predictions for the Last Two Months

The National League wild card will come down to the last day

Right now, Washington holds the first wild card, two games ahead of the Milwaukee Brewers. However, there are three teams within a half-game of the Brewers: the Cardinals, the Mets (winners of six in a row) and the Phillies (losers of three straight). The Arizona Diamondbacks sit one game behind those three, and the San Francisco Giants, despite losing seven of ten, sit jut 1 ½ games behind the Diamondbacks. So with a six-team logjam around the second wild card position, it is likely that we will not know the wild card matchup until the last day of the regular season, and it may be that we need multiple Game 163s to take place if we want to find out the winners.

Minnesota will hit 300 home runs as a team

The Twins hit 182 home runs through their first 98 games. The current major league record is 267, which the New York Yankees set in 2018. Nelson Cruz has been on fire for the Twins, and with players like Eddie Rosario, Miguel Sano and Max Kepler joining Cruz in the batting order, the Twins are a real threat to break that record — and roar into the postseason as American League Central champions.

Atlanta will win the National League pennant

First, of course, the Braves have to win their division and make the postseason. However, the Washington Nationals and Philadelphia Phillies did not do much at the deadline. The New York Mets were the biggest buyers in the division, but their moribund offense will bring the team back down to earth in the coming weeks. However, with players like Brian McCann and Freddie Freeman in the Braves’ batting order — players with postseason experience — such youngsters as Dansby Swanson and Ronald Acuna Jr have the leadership they need to push into a National League postseason bracket that will supposedly be dominated by the likes of Kershaw and Ryu in Los Angeles, but we have seen how that rotation has done in the World Series the last few years. The Braves also picked up Dallas Keuchel to join their rotation and that investment has paid off big dividends. Do not be surprised to find Atlanta squaring off the Yankees, Indians, Twins or Astros in the World Series.

Pete Alonso will break the record for home runs by a rookie

Aaron Judge holds this record right now, with 52 long balls in the 2017 campaign. Pete Alonso had hit 33 through 99 games and hasn’t stopped since. He won the Home Run Derby and has not had the slump that a lot of derby winners have, seeing their swing altered by the big bashes on national television. The Mets have 15 games yet to come against Pittsburgh, Kansas City and Colorado — teams with a combined ERA over 5.00. If you like the Mets, you see him pouring on the power the rest of the way.
