One of the signature events in horse racing is the Kentucky Derby, which is set for May 6. The field for the race is capped at 20 horses, although as many as four alternates are selected in case one of the first 20 withdraws. Horses earn qualification by gathering points in one of three paths. The main Road to the Kentucky Derby is a series of races in North America (as well as one in Dubai). The Japan Road is a series of four races in Japan, and there is a European Road, seven races in France, England and Ireland. In each race, the top four finishes gain points, and the major prep races in March and April offer more points than the earlier ones. In the case of a tie, earnings in non-restricted stakes make the decision. The main Road to the Kentucky Derby includes 37 races.
