Golf PGA John Deere Classic Odds: Denny McCarthy, Favorite

The John Deere Classic is this week’s stop on the PGA Tour, as golfers head south to Silvis, Illinois to the TPC Deere Run. J.T. Poston is the defending champion, and he will be back this year. Ludvig Aberg, one of the new exciting names on the tour, as well Cameron Young and Russell Henley. This isn’t a designated event, and many of the big names on the PGA Tour have been waiting for a week or two off, so the field here isn’t all that stacked. Bet on the PGA John Deere Classic!

Over the last eight editions of the John Deere Classic, the average winning score has been 21.25 strokes below par. The course doesn’t offer much length, and the par-5 greens are reachable in two for just about everyone in the field. This means that you don’t have to have immense driver distance; instead, the winners will be the ones with solid iron play and convert birdie opportunities.

Russell Henley

has a Strokes Gained: Approach of 1.04 per round through his last 24 rounds; the only golfer better in that metric in this field is Mark Hubbard. In his last seven tournaments, Henley has cracked the top 20 each time, and this is the weakest field of any he has faced over that stretch.

Emiliano Grillo

grabbed the plaid jacket in his win at the Charles Schwab Challenge, and he has been the fifth-best putter among this field since The Players Championship, a surprising metric given his historical struggles on the green.

Stephan Jaeger

tied the course record in the fourth round at the Rocket Mortgage Classic this past weekend; his biggest problem has been his inability to play four straight rounds of solid golf. At the PGA Championship, he lost 5.3 strokes in the Sunday round, a trend that held at the Charles Schwab Challenge (4.3), the Memorial (1.02) and the Travelers (6.5). Having a successful Sunday this time around might propel him to a win in this diluted field.

Chez Reavie

did much better than expected at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, finishing T29 on a course that doesn’t really match his strengths. He has now made six cuts in a row and finished in the top 30 three straight tournaments. His Strokes Gained: Approach of 8.75 at the Rocket Mortgage Classic led this field.

Ryan Moore

has not done well lately, but TPC Deere Run has been a good place for him. He has cracked the top 25 three years in a row here, including that second-place result two years ago. He won the John Deere Classic in 2016. His approach game is decent, and his driving accuracy is elite, so this is a course where he should do well.

Denny McCarthy

is the favorite, with three consecutive top-20 finishes, including T7 at the Travelers and second place at the Memorial. No putter in this field is better than McCarthy, and in his last five tournaments, he has gained at least three strokes on approach three times.
