In last week’s race, Justin Allgaier zipped past teammate Josh Berry and clung to that lead late in a two-lap overtime finish. Allgaier selected the outside lane for the last restart and had to hold off Berry, who moved into the lead going into Turn 1. However, Allgaier nailed the gap to the outside near Turn 2 and then pulled away, winning by .422 seconds.

Allgaier had swiped the lead from Berry using the bottom lane after the last restart at Lap 138 before Ryan Vargas spun on Lap 143, forcing the last restart and sending things to overtime. Allgaier won his first race at Atlanta Motor Speedway earlier this season, and so now he has his first career victory at Darlington. He has 16 total wins in his career.

Josh Berry was on a part-time deal to drive the No. 8 JRM Chevrolet, but Sam Mayer will fill that seat the rest of the year, as that team is still looking for a sponsor. Brandon Jones came in third, ahead of Noah Gragson, whose fourth-place finish was at first wiped away via disqualification due to suspension mount issues, but his appeal was heard, and he was given back his fourth-place result and his $100,000 Dash 4 Cash bonus. Daniel Hemric led 38 laps but ended up settling for fifth place. The only driver who led more laps was Gragson, who led for 40, but Burton and Berry ended up beating Gragson off pit road near the end.

Austin Cindric led for 34 laps and picked up a win in the first stage, but he crashed near the checkered flag on the front stretch. He would end up settling for 29th place. Burton won the second stage but pitted for tires before the overtime finish, and the delay did not pay off. He led a dozen laps overall but finished tenth.

Dover International Speedway is nicknamed “The Monster Mile,” as it is a concrete oval, one mile in length. The straights are banked at nine degrees, and the turns are banked at 24 degrees. The Drydene 200 has run each year here since 1982. Allgaier actually returns as the defending champion, winning this race in August 2020 after the race was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He also won this race in 2018, and given how well he is racing, it’s hard to argue against picking him again.
