AAF Week 6 Betting Preview & Picks

Written by on March 13, 2019

The Alliance of American Football is turning into an entertaining league after all. Two of the Week 5 contests came down to last-minute kicks to win the game, while San Antonio almost squandered a 26-point against Arizona in a game with a wild finish of its own. There are still five or six teams that could take three of the playoff positions, while the Orlando Apollos certainly seem like the team to beat for now. Three of the AAF’s teams (Arizona, Birmingham and Salt Lake City) are in desperation now, as the Hotshots have dropped three in a row, Birmingham has dropped two straight and Salt Lake City simply can’t finish wins. We have AAF betting previews for each of the four games in league action for St. Patrick’s Day weekend.

AAF Week 6 Betting Preview & Picks

Saturday, March 16

Memphis at Salt Lake City (4:00pm ET, Bleacher Report Live)

Salt Lake City comes in with a 1-4 record — but they could be 3-2 if two of their losses had just come out differently by a total of five points. Their one victory was the one that started Arizona’s three-game losing streak, which means that this victory is looking less and less solid. The Stallions have a stout defensive line and a decent running game. Their quarterback is serviceable, but they can’t finish games right now. They welcome a Memphis team that might be even worse. They are also 1-4 and found themselves tied with Atlanta, 20-20, in the waning second last week, but then they was Younghoe Koo nail the game-winning kick for the Legends. Memphis then mounted an impressive drive, but Zach Mettenberger decided to force a pass while under pressure, and the ensuing interception would end Memphis’ hopes. The key was on third downs, as Atlanta converted more often than Memphis did. AAF Week 6 Betting Prediction: Salt Lake City 20, Memphis 17

Arizona at Orlando (8:00pm ET, NFL Network)

Orlando is 5-0 and is winning by an average of 14.4 points per game. They host a Hotshots team that has dropped three in a row. In their Week 5 win over Birmingham, the Apollos ran for 182 yards and got 286 passing yards and two touchdown passes from SMU product Garrett Gilbert. They rolled up 468 yards of total offense and scored 31 points. The Orlando defense racked up five sacks as a pick-six. Now the Apollos welcome Arizona, who almost came back from a 26-0 deficit at halftime last week for a huge win but fell short. Rashad Ross drew a pass interference penalty in the end zone on a play that had resulted in an interception — just after San Antonio committed a defensive holding penalty that negated another interception. The Hotshots moved to their own 28 to try the 4th-and-12 play that the AAF utilizes in place of the onside kick, but the Hotshots could not get off a pass, and San Antonio just needed to kneel the ball to clinch the win. Can Arizona pull off another win? Not in Orlando. AAF Week 6 Betting Prediction: Orlando 34, Arizona 16

Sunday, March 17

San Antonio at Atlanta (4:00pm ET, CBS Sports)

The San Antonio offense is impressive, as wideout Mekale McKay, who had five catches for 91 yards on Sunday, is one of the budding stars in this league and one of the top three wideouts in the AAF. However, they sit at 3-2, and as we saw in the second half against Arizona, their defense can fall apart in a hurry. Which Commanders team will go to Atlanta on Sunday? It remains to be seen. Atlanta has turned an 0-3 start into a 2-3 record, thanks to the improvement Aaron Murray has brought to their offense. Hosting San Antonio is a terrific opportunity to keep climbing the standings, but they will need to find a way to calm down that Commanders offense. Holding Memphis to 20 points isn’t the most impressive way to do that, but Atlanta showed that they can score when they need to last week. AAF Week 6 Betting Prediction: Atlanta 23, San Antonio 21

Birmingham at San Diego (8:00pm ET, NFL Network)

Birmingham has turned a 3-0 start into a 3-2 record, but Keith Price looked solid at quarterback off the bench. The Iron now has four of five on the road, but Price put up almost 250 yards of offense and used his feet to keep plays going, so the Iron could start winning games. However, they need to start winning now to avoid sliding out of playoff contention — remember, it’s just a 10-game regular season. San Diego is also 3-2, and the Fleet won last week without Philip Nelson (clavicle) at quarterback). The key for the Fleet was their stout defense — which scored two touchdowns, one via the pick-six and one on a fumble recovery. The Iron will represent a tough challenge, but can coach Mike Martz find a way to deliver another win? AAF Week 6 Betting Prediction: San Diego 17, Birmingham 16
