We’re wrapping up the second round of the 2023 U.S. Open, and we already have seen some shocking upsets. Casper Ruud, who made it to the finals at Flushing Meadows a year ago, went down in the first round to Zhang Zhizhen in five sets. The two met at the French Open earlier this year, and Ruud beat Zhang in four sets. This time, though, Zhang bounced back from losing the fourth set, 0-6, to prevail in the fifth, 6-2. Zhang delivered 60 winners and 18 aces with his dominant serve and forehand. Zhang was ranked #281 in the world at the end of June 2022, but now he has risen to #67, the first Chinese man to appear in the Top 100. He was also the first Chinese player to get to the quarterfinals of an ATP Masters 1000 tournament when he advanced to the last eight in Madrid. What can we expect to see in today’s action? Jabeur had 43 unforced errors and lost 43% of her first-serve points in her opener. I’m going with the value, the history between these two, and the first-round performances that each put up. Daria Kasatkina has a 30-20 record so far and was the runner-up at the Adelaide International and the Eastbourne International. She lost in the quarters at the Canada Open and in the third round at the Western & Southern Open. In the first round here, she needed three sets to get past Alycia Parks (2-6, 6-4, 6-2).
Kenin has an 18-15 record in 2023 and made the third round at Wimbledon. Since then, she has been on break from the main tour. She stopped Ana Bogdan in straight sets (7-6(2), 6-4) to get to the second round. Kenin has won two of three matches against Kasatkina, but Kasatkina won their last matchup at the 2022 Sydney Tennis Classic. Kasatkina to win in three sets.

An interesting prop here is the game total – I see Alcaraz winning here in straight sets. To get better value than the moneyline, take the under.

Daniil Medvedev vs Christopher O’Connel

Medvedev is 24-5 in his career at Flushing Meadows and won the whole thing here in 2019 and made the finals in 2019. Medvedev has five titles in 2023, including one ATP Masters 1000 win. He steamrolled Attila Balazs in the first round, 6-1, 6-1. O’Connell faced Max Purcell in the first round and advanced in four sets, taking the finale in a tiebreaker. He is now 2-2 at Flushing Meadows but has not won a match here since 2020. Medvedev is 2-0 in his career against O’Connell. Medvedev to win.
