NCAA Football Odds: Over/Under Picks for Week 1

NCAA Football Odds: Over/Under Picks for Week 1

One of the biggest questions entering the 2023 college football season is whether or not the Alabama Crimson Tide is ready to return to the top of the sport. Since 2020, head coach Nick Saban’s approach has changed from a smashmouth, physical game to one of finesse. We’ve seen quarterbacks such as Jalen Hurts, Tua Tagovailoa, Mac Jones, and Bryce Young stack up points, but the defense has regressed, and the offense isn’t as physical. These issues have led to losses against the likes of LSU, Tennessee, Texas A&M and Georgia. They are no longer elite at getting stops, and they also struggle to extend drives. They ranked 115th in the nation in percentage of rushes for zero or negative yardage on third and fourth down in 2022. Between 2009 and 2020, they were eighth in that metric, according to ESPN. As we consider college football betting choices for the first full week of the season, don’t miss these point total predictions in your NCAA Football Odds.

Nebraska Cornhuskers vs Minnesota Golden Gophers

NCAAF Lines: Nebraska Cornhuskers (+7) at Minnesota Golden Gophers (O/U 43)
When: Thursday, August 31, 2023, 8:00 pm ET
Where: Huntington Bank Stadium, Minneapolis, MN
TV/Live Stream: FOX

The Cornhuskers scored 22.6 points per game last year while permitting 27.6. Their main problem came in stopping the running game of their opponents. They brought in Jeff Sims from Georgia Tech to run the offense; Sims is used to a run-first attack; he only threw for 1,115 yards and five touchdowns with three interceptions in 2022. Minnesota is bringing in a new quarterback and a new tailback (Sean Tyler) through the transfer portal, but their learning-curve offense should be bolstered by a defense that permitted just 13.3 points per game. Take the under.

NCAA Football Odds | East Carolina Pirates vs Michigan Wolverines

NCAAF Lines: East Carolina Pirates (+36) at Michigan Wolverines (O/U 51.5)
When: Saturday, September 2, 2023, 12:00 pm ET
Where: Michigan Stadium, Ann Arbor, MI
TV/Live Stream: Peacock

East Carolina struggled on defense in 2022, particularly against the pass, and they have a lot of new players in their secondary this time around. Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy should have plenty of open receivers down the field. The Wolverines’ O-line has the size and talent to give McCarthy plenty of time in the pocket. On defense, Michigan might not have either of their starting safeties, and the Pirates have Mason Garcia, a one-time four-star recruit, at quarterback. He is 6’5” and has a cannon of an arm, so he should be able to see and hit open men down the field as well. Take the over.

Colorado Buffaloes vs TCU Horned Frogs

NCAAF Lines: Colorado Buffaloes (+20.5) at TCU Horned Frogs (O/U 63.5)
When: Saturday, September 2, 2023, 12:00 pm ET
Where: Amon G. Carter Stadium, Fort Worth, TX
TV/Live Stream: FOX

No team has ever brought more players through the transfer portal than Colorado did after the arrival of Deion Sanders as head coach. There is all kinds of buzz around the Buffaloes, starting with new quarterback Shedeur Sanders, the son of Coach Prime. TCU lost a ton of players to graduation and the NFL after last year’s unlikely run to the national championship game, and we’ve seen two numbers shift since this line opened: TCU was favored by 21 ½ points, and that line has contracted by a point. The initial point total was 59 ½ and has jumped up. TCU’s defense was opportunistic but not shutdown last year, and we really have no idea what Colorado’s defense will do. I see this game turning into a track meet – and a Colorado win. For the point total, take the over.

NCAA Football Odds | LSU Tigers vs Florida State Seminoles

NCAAF Lines: LSU Tigers (-2.5) at Florida State Seminoles (O/U 56)
When: Sunday, September 3, 2023, 7:30 pm ET
Where: Camping World Stadium, Orlando, FL
TV/Live Stream: ABC

LSU almost fired Brian Kelly after Week 1 last year, as the Tigers blew a winnable game against these same Seminoles in New Orleans. Jayden Daniels is back at quarterback; he also led the team in rushing last year. The O-line and the tailback group are elite, and the receivers have speed and depth. The front seven on defense will also be a problem for Florida State. The Seminoles return quarterback Jordan Travis and edge rusher Jared Verse and are favorites to win the ACC. This point total has dropped from 58 ½ points to 56. Last year’s final score between these two teams was 24-23, and I see another close game this year that brings in enough defense to keep both teams short of 30. Take the under.
