Rafael Nadal’s comeback hit a snag on Friday as he lost to Australian Jordan Thompson in the quarterfinals of the Brisbane International. Nadal actually won the first set and had three match points in the second before Thompson began a surprising comeback, winning, 5-7, 7-6, 6-3. The longest rally of the match, lasting 33 shots, brought the match to an end. This was Nadal’s first quarterfinal since Wimbledon in 2022. Nadal, who spent much of 2023 recovering from hip surgery, showed no signs of difficulty with the injury and looks like his former self. How will he do in this year’s ATP Grand Slam events? These are the top ten seeds in the men’s draw; note that Nadal has not yet been seeded. Djokovic is the heavy favorite for a reason as he already has 10 Australian Open titles in his trophy case, including four of the last five. The only time he didn’t win down under came during the year when the Australian government would not allow him into the country because of his refusal to get a COVID-19 vaccination. Djokovic also won at the French Open and the U.S. Open in 2023.
The top rival for Djokovic has become Carlos Alcaraz, who beat Djokovic at Wimbledon, but Sinner and Medvedev are dangerous as well. Nadal has 22 Grand Slam titles in his career, but it’s hard to see him bouncing back to win this tournament so quickly in his return to play. Djokovic is particularly dominant on hard courts, making him an even more prohibitive favorite.
