2023 ATP Tennis Odds: National Bank Open Betting Lines

Written by on August 7, 2023

The National Bank Open, set for August 7-13, is the current iteration of the Canadian Open, the second oldest active tennis tournament after Wimbledon. Founded in 1881, this tournament enters its 133rd edition and took place on clay until 1979, when it moved to hardcourt surfaces. The event takes place at IGA Stadium and Sobeys Stadium in Montreal and Toronto, respectively, and features both men’s and women’s singles and doubles. No Canadian man has won the event since Robert Bedard, who won the singles title in 1955, 1957, and 1958. Ivan Lendl has the most men’s singles titles here, with six, and Rafael Nadal became the oldest tournament champion in 2019, winning the trophy at the age of 33. Let’s take a look at the draw as you consider how to add this into your Tennis betting for the week.

Men’s Singles Notes

Carlos Alcaraz, Holger Rune, Jannik Sinner, and Stefanos Tsitsipas, all seeds with byes through the first round, were placed in the top half of the men’s singles draw. Alcaraz is fresh off his huge win at Wimbledon, where he took down Novak Djokovic in the final, and his next breakthrough is to win a match at the National Bank Open. When he played here last time, he crashed out in the first round. Alcaraz has a growing rivalry with Rune, and they could meet in the quarterfinals. Before that, though, Alcaraz will take on the winner of Bernabe Zapata Miralles and Ben Shelton.

In the bottom half of the draw, Daniil Medvedev, the 2021 National Bank Open winner, is set to take on Taylor Fritz. Casper Ruud and Andrey Rublev are set to meet in the quarterfinals if they take care of business in the early rounds. Christopher Eubanks and Gael Monfils are set for an exciting first-round matchup – and the “reward” for the winner is a date with Tsitsipas in the second round. Tsitsipas is in this tournament for the fifth time; in 2018, he made it all the way to the final but still has yet to win an ATP Masters 1000 tournament anywhere besides Monte-Carlo. 15th seed Hubert Hurkacz, who made it to the final last year, starts as a heavy favorite against Alexander Bublik. 11th seed Cameron Norrie takes on Alex de Minaur, currently ranked 19th in the world Felix Auger-Aliassime is seeded 10th and gets to face a qualifier; after that, he would see Lorenzo Sonego or Andy Murray, who has three major titles in his trophy case. Milos Raonic, who once was ranked as high as third in the world, will play in this tournament for the first time in four years and only his third tournament since he came back from injury in June. He faces ninth-seeded Frances Tiafoe in the first round.

Women’s Singles Notes

Nine of the top ten ranked women in the tennis world will take part in the National Bank Open, with Ons Jabeur the only exception. She has reported a knee injury, but she could also be using the time to get over that tough loss at Wimbledon. Iga Swiatek, Elena Rybakina, and Aryna Sabalenka will be on hand, as will Marketa Vondrousouva, who just became the first unseeded woman ever to win a Wimbledon title. Last year, the women’s draw broke down completely as unseeded Beatriz Haddad Maia made it all the way to the final where she fell to 15th-seeded Simona Halep.

Swiatek won the tournament in Warsaw this year (where the surface was hardcourt for the first time instead of clay). She also had a nice run at Wimbledon. She lost to Haddad Maia in the third round here last year; this time around, she has Karolina Pliskova as a possible first opponent after her bye. Elina Svitolina, who stopped Swiatek at Wimbledon, is awaiting in a possible quarterfinal match.

Jessica Pegula has maintained a top-five ranking all year, and Coco Gauff is looking strong after a solid run at wimbledon. She beat Rybakina and Sabalenka at this tournament last year. Vondrousova faces Mayar Sherif in the first round and could see Gauff in the round of 16. Gauff beat Vondrousova in three sets in their only previous meeting, in 2021 in Dubai. Caroline Wozniacki, at one point the top-ranked player in women’s tennis, is back after a three-year absence. We also have a first-round battle between Venus Williams and Madison Keys.
