NFL Week 16: San Francisco 49ers at Tennessee Titans Betting Preview

NFL Week 16: San Francisco 49ers at Tennessee Titans Betting Preview

Written by on December 22, 2021

The San Francisco 49ers (8-6) have won two in a row and five of six, peaking at the right time to gain playoff position. With just a 1-4 record in the NFC West and two games behind both Arizona and the Rams, San Francisco will need a wild card to get in – and as many wins as possible. Their next challenge is a trip across three time zones on a short week to Tennessee, where the Titans are reeling, losers of three of their last four, including a six-point loss at Pittsburgh on Sunday. Their offense has only made it to 20 points in their last four games, and that was a 20-0 win over a hapless Jacksonville team that sent coach Urban Meyer packing after the loss. Can the Titans bounce back?

Let’s check out the online NFL betting preview.

Why should you bet on the 49ers?

With six wins in their last eight games, the 49ers have moved into sixth in the NFC, one game ahead of the Saints and the Vikings. In last week’s win over the Atlanta Falcons, Jimmy Garoppolo went 18 of 23 for 235 yards and a score. Jeff Wilson Jr emerged as a real running threat, carrying the ball 21 times for 110 yards and a score. Tight end George Kittle caught six passes for 93 yards.

The defense has been solid recently, as the 49ers have reduced their permitted scoring average to 22.4 points per game. Against the Falcons, they only allowed 13, and they will need a similar effort against the Titans. Tennessee is still without Derrick Henry, and Ryan Tannehill has not been able to lead the offense as effectively without a serious running threat in the backfield. Tennessee’s defense has played well in recent weeks but has tired late as the offense has not been able to sustain much in the way of time of possession.

Why should you put your money on the Titans?

A month ago, Tennessee looked like they had sewn up the AFC South with a sweep of Indianapolis. However, the Colts have heated up and are now just a game back of the Titans, so they only need to gain two more games to win the division, since the Titans have a head-to-head advantage. In the loss to Pittsburgh, Tannehill went 23 of 32 for 153 yards and a pick. Tailback D’Onta Foreman ran well, with 22 carries for 108 yards, but without Henry, the Titans are having a very difficult time getting into the end zone.

The defense only allowed 19 points against Pittsburgh, but if the Titans want to have a chance against the 49ers, they will need to get more out of their offense. Specifically, they will need to punch the ball into the end zone. Settling for three or four field goals will likely fail to do the job. The 49ers do have the challenge of a trip east on a short week, which will play to the Titans’ advantage, but they still have to execute.

Final Score and Betting Prediction

I see Tennessee’s defense getting a couple of turnovers and driving the rhythm of the game. Jimmy G is due an off game, and Tennessee had a breakthrough running game against the Steelers but had some bad luck. I predict a final score of Tennessee 20, San Francisco 17.
