New Orleans at Green Bay NFL Odds & Betting Pick for Week 7

Written by on October 19, 2017

The New Orleans head to Lambeau Field with a 3-2 record and on the momentum that comes with a 52-38 home win over the Detroit Lions. They take on a 4-2 Green Bay team that fell to the Minnesota Vikings last week, 23-10, and also lost quarterback Aaron Rodgers (collarbone) for what may be the rest of the season. These two teams last tangled down in the Crescent City in 2014, with New Orleans rolling to a 44-23 home win. The Packers look to start backup quarterback Brett Hundley, although Packers fans have launched a petition to have the team sign Colin Kaepernick, and other rumors have Wisconsin native Tony Romo leaving the broadcast booth to start for the Pack at some point. Take a look at our prediction for this game before you lock in your NFL odds picks.

Why should you bet on the Saints?

The New Orleans Saints can just about always put up a ton of points. They proved no differently on Sunday, as they went into the locker room at halftime up on Detroit 31-10. They made that a 45-10 advantage midway through the third quarter, but then Detroit turned their offense on and got within a touchdown, before New Orleans grabbed a pick-six to ice the game. The Saints augmented their normally stout offense with three defensive touchdowns — two pick-sixes and a fumble recovery in the end zone. One surprising statistic jumped out from Sunday’s Saints victory — they ran for more yards (193) than they passed for (186). Mark Ingram picked up 114 of those grounds yards and found the end zone twice. Quarterback Drew Brees has posted a combined paser rating of 103.2 this season, fifth-best in the NFL, but the presence of a solid running game takes some of the pressure off him. The Saints’ defense did take the ball away four times, and they sacked Detroit quarterback Matthew Stafford five times, but they still gave up 312 yards through the air — and they did allow a huge comeback. So the Saints’ defense is definitely a question mark.

Why should you put your money on the Packers?

All eyes will be on Brett Hundley this week, as the Packers really don’t have much of a running game to speak of. He threw a touchdown pass against the Vikings last week, but he also threw three interceptions. I expect him to look better against the Saints with a week of first-team repetitions in practice under his belt, but he is young, and he is no Aaron Rodgers. The Packers are #26 in the NFL with 88.3 rushing yards per game, and they will need to get more out of their offensive line, both in terms of opening holes for Ty Montgomery and the rushing game and in terms of giving Hundley time to find receivers down the field, if they want to have a chance against the Saints. Are the Packers a safe bet in the NFL odds? The Packers’ defense has a lot of questions to answer as well. They give up 326 yards per game, 14th in the NFL, and a lot of that has to do with the fact that Rodgers was leading sustained drives up and down the field. That Swiss-cheese secondary that the Packers feature will have a lot more exposure against New Orleans, as Hundley is likely to struggle to move the ball up and down the field. If you like the Packers, you see them putting together an offensive plan that Hundley can operate without a lot of stress and getting a rush on Brees.

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

The Saints seem to have a little extra edge to them this season. I see them feasting on mistakes by Hundley and scoring a lot of points on this Packer defense. I predict a final score of New Orleans 38, Green Bay 20.
