Buffalo at NY Jets TNF Expert Preview, Odds & NFL Betting Pick

Written by on October 31, 2017

The Buffalo Bills (5-2) sit just a half-game behind New England in the AFC East after delivering a 34-14 whipping of the Oakland Raiders on Sunday. They visit a New York Jets team that sits at 3-5, having dropped three in a row since that surprising 3-2 start. The Jets fell by five to Atlanta at home last week, 25-20, thanks to a defensive breakdown. The Bills beat the Jets in the season opener out at Orchard Park, 21-12. Can the Jets get revenge for that early setback, or will the Bills make a serious statement about their position in the division with a sweep? Check out our Week 9 lines & NFL betting prediction for this prime-time affair.

Why should you bet on the Bills?

The expectations for Buffalo this season dwindled a bit when they traded away wideout Sammy Watkins to the Rams, which many observers thought would doom them as a one-dimensional offense. LeSean McCoy has definitely held up his end of the bargain — against Oakland he ran for 151 yards on 27 attempts and a touchdown. Quarterback Tyrod Taylor accounted for two touchdowns, throwing for one (going 20 for 27 for 165 yards) and running for another. Taylor’s touchdown-to-interception ratio this year is 8-to-2 so far, which has been effective enough in terms of game management. Are the Bills a safe bet in Week 9? The Bills’ defense is really the power behind this start, though. They are third in the NFL against the run, permitting just 80.1 yards per game. Against the pass, they have allowed 266.4 yards per game, but they have been able to force turnovers (including the four takeaways they had against Oakland last week) and buckle down defensively when opposing teams near the red zone. If you like the Bills, then you see them clamping down on Matt Forte and the Jets’ running game and forcing Josh McCown to beat them down the field.

Why should you put your money on the Jets?

The Jets led Atlanta last week by four at halftime, but they simply don’t have the talent to beat a lot of teams in the NFL. So when Matt Ryan led the Falcons on a comeback in the fourth quarter, finding Mohammed Sanu for a touchdown with just over 12 minutes remaining, the Jets didn’t have the weapons to come back. After that, they simply traded field goals with the Falcons and still lost by five. McCown played well, going 26 for 33 for 257 yards and a pair of scores, with no interceptions. Robby Anderson caught six of those passes for 104 yards. However, the Jets only gained 43 yards on the ground, on 22 attempts. The Jets’ defensive issues mean that they will have to score a lot to beat just about anyone. They give up 361.4 yards per game overall, 26th in the league. That means that the Jets need to find ways to hold onto the ball and sustain drives. Without a running game to speak of, though, the Jets will be in trouble against that Buffalo defense. With the amount of time that the Bills chew off the clock with their running game, New York will have to be opportunistic on offense to have a chance.

Expert NFL Betting Pick and Final Score Prediction

Buffalo has covered the spread in five of their last seven games (with one loss against the spread and a push). The Jets have only covered the spread twice in their last nine games. I just don’t see New York having the talent to beat a Bills team that has established themselves so solidly on both sides of the ball. I predict a final score of Buffalo 27, New York 16
