NFC Divisional Round Betting Predictions

Written by on January 10, 2019

We’ve made it to the quarterfinals of the National Football League playoffs, as the conference divisional rounds are set for Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday night, the Dallas Cowboys will be on the West Coast taking on the Los Angeles Rams, and the next afternoon, the Philadelphia Eagles will be down in the Big Easy to face the New Orleans Saints. In both cases, the home team is seen as a strong favorite, with the Rams picked to win by a touchdown and the Saints picked to win by nine points. Can the two NFC East underdogs surprise bettors and win this weekend? Or will the home team favorites hold? Take a look at our NFL betting predictions for each game before you lock in your final wagers.

NFC Divisional Round Betting Predictions

Saturday, January 12

Dallas at Los Angeles Rams (8:15pm ET)

Why should the Rams win this? The Cowboys have an offense that can move the ball at times — but can stall in the mud at times. Quarterback Dak Prescott still has issues with consistency as far as accuracy as concerned, and there have been many times this season when he has missed wide open receivers on passes that would have gone for touchdowns. Tailback Ezekiel Elliott has had a number of stellar games and led the league in rushing this season, but there have also been games when the line bogged down and Elliott didn’t seem particularly interested in running the ball. When it comes to defense, the Cowboys have locked down some major opponents, but they also gave up 35 points to the New York Giants in Week 17, and when Seattle decided to throw the ball in the wild card round, they were able to torch that Dallas secondary. However, there are also reasons for Dallas fans to have optimism. The Rams have had trouble on defense down the stretch this season, particularly against the running game. Philadelphia came to Los Angeles a few weeks ago and hung 30 on the Rams, delivering a huge win. The Rams are still a young team, with Jared Goff leading the team in just his third season, and they have that upset loss to Atlanta at home in the first round of the playoffs last year hanging over them. Dallas comes in having won eight out of nine, showing the persistence to stay in games. I’m not sure that the Cowboys can overcome the Rams, especially if Jared Goff has the chance to throw the ball in a game-winning drive, but I do see them covering. NFC Divisional Round Prediction: Los Angeles 27, Dallas 23

Sunday, January 13

Philadelphia at New Orleans (4:40pm ET)

Last year, Nick Foles led the Philadelphia Eagles on a magical run through the postseason, as his team came in as the underdog every week but just kept winning until they hoisted the Lombardi Trophy as the winners of Super Bowl LII. It helped, of course, that the Eagles had home field advantage all the way through the playoffs until the Super Bowl — and that they had the bye through the wild card round. Philadelphia struggled mightily last week to hold off the Chicago Bears, 16-15, and benefited from a blocked field goal as time expired. The Eagles’ defense was tremendous through the first three quarters as Mitch Trubisky and the Bears’ offense struggled to get first downs. However, the Bears made some adjustments in the fourth quarter, and the Bears almost completed a comeback. With New Orleans, things will be much more challenging. The game will be played indoors, which means that the elements won’t affect the Saints’ passing and running game. As good as the Bears’ defense is, the Saints have an even better unit against the run. Nick Foles threw two interceptions last week, but the Bears didn’t make the Eagles pay on the scoreboard. The Saints’ offense is too good for the Eagles to make that many mistakes again and survive. I don’t see the Saints beating the Eagles by 41, like they did on November 18, but I do see them rolling to a win. NFC Divisional Round Prediction: New Orleans 31, Philadelphia 16
