2017 NFL MVP Betting Picks, Expert Analysis & Odds

It might be way too early to call this one yet, but there’s a clear idea of the players that will shine this 2017 season. At this present time, Tom Brady is the favorite to win the 2017 NFL MVP award. Despite coming in at odds that ranged anywhere between 90/1 and 135/1 before the start of the 2016 NFL season, Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan took home the MVP award at the end of the season. He threw 38 touchdown passes against just seven picks, leading his squad to the NFC South title and an 11-5 record during the season. They advanced to Super Bowl LI, where they watched a big lead evaporate against the New England Patriots, who won the title — but Ryan’s play during the season was more than worthy. Let’s take a look at some of the odds on players to win the MVP trophy, as you put together your NFL betting futures plan.

2017 NFL MVP Betting Picks, Expert Analysis & Odds

  • Tom Brady (QB, New England) +450
  • Aaron Rodgers (QB, Green Bay) +700
  • Derek Carr (QB, Oakland) +900
  • Ben Roethlisberger (QB, Pittsburgh) +1000
  • Dak Prescott (QB, Dallas) +1200
  • Russell Wilson (QB, Seattle) +1200
  • Matt Ryan (QB, Atlanta) +1600
  • Ezekiel Elliott (RB, Dallas) +2000
  • Cam Newton (QB, Carolina) +2500
  • Andrew Luck (QB, Indianapolis) +2500
If you’re wondering why there are so many quarterbacks at the top of the odds, there have been 61 MVP trophies handed out since 1957. Forty of them went to quarterbacks, and 21 have gone to players from other positions — eighteen to running backs, one to a defensive tackle, one to a linebacker, and one to a kicker.

Tom Brady is the Clear Favorite

You have to like Brady’s chances, of course. The AFC East does have a mildly resurgent Miami team, but the Jets and the Bills are still dumpster fires, so that should give Brady five or six wins right there — and a bye into the playoffs. There are some tough road games, such as trips to Denver and Mexico City (to play Oakland), but Denver will have either Trevor Siemian or Paxton Lynch running the offense, and that Denver defense is another year older.

Derek Carr is One to Watch

Derek Carr is a definite wild card here. He had the Oakland Raiders atop the AFC West until he went down to a season-ending injury, and if you watched his backups try to lead the Oakland offense in Week 17 and in the playoffs, you saw what a difference he made. Oakland fans may be a little less enthusiastic watching a team that is headed to Las Vegas, but Carr and wideout Amari Cooper make a dangerous duo. Derek Carr is one of the top favorites to win the 2017 NFL MVP award.

It’s Not Going to Be Rodgers Year

I don’t think Green Bay will make it far enough to make Rodgers a candidate — but the Chicago Bears don’t have a solid quarterback yet, the Minnesota Vikings are mysteriously sticking with Sam Bradford, and the Detroit Lions still haven’t signed Matthew Stafford. So the Pack could come out of the Central, but then will their iffy defense hold up enough? A great quarterback can’t get the MVP all by himself.

There Are Some Guys in the NFC to Watch

I have the same question about Dak Prescott in Dallas. Sure, he has a terrific offensive line, and running back Ezekiel Elliott makes a dynamic offensive partner for him. But the Dallas defense lost four starters to free agency and are hoping that their backups and the draft will help them stay afloat. The NFC East has three other dangerous quarterbacks (Kirk Cousins, Carson Wentz and Eli Manning), and Dallas lost twice to the Giants last year. Ten wins might be an optimistic outlook for Dallas this year. Cam Newton is an interesting choice too. Two years ago, he led the Panthers to the Super Bowl; last year, the team imploded and missed the playoffs. Does Newton learn the lessons from a hangover season and get back to the playoffs? Or do the Panthers underperform again? Matt Ryan presents a similar question — after blowing that huge lead in the Super Bowl, will the Falcons have the psychological ability to compete? Right now, I have to go with Brady. The Patriots look like a lock in the AFC, while the NFC’s top teams all have too many question marks.

Final NFL MVP Expert Prediction

It’s understandable why the NFL MVP odds are what they are right now. With the fact the Brady might be playing his last few seasons or maybe season, then he’ll probably get the award. But, it would be cool for a young buck to take it. After the 2016 season gave us a show of upcoming players making big things for their teams, then it’s time for a new generation to take the title. Anyway, things can always change at the last moment. So, be sure to keep checking out the latest NFL betting updates for the next few weeks.
