When the latest AP Top 25 poll came out on Sunday, the Oklahoma Sooners had jumped all the way to #5 after knocking off then-#3 Texas in the Red River Rivalry last week. The Longhorns slid down to #9. The top-ranked Georgia Bulldogs demolished Kentucky at home and gained back some of the first-place votes that had fallen away after their near-loss at Auburn a week ago. Second-ranked Michigan also won in a rout, taking Minnesota to the woodshed, but while they got 11 first-place votes, they remain a slot behind the Bulldogs. Ohio State and Florida State moved up to take the third and fourth spots in the rankings, respectively. Behind Oklahoma come Penn State, Washington, Oregon, Texas, and USC, who trailed Arizona, 17-0, at home early and had to scramble to win in triple overtime. Getting this game as the Big Noon Kickoff on FOX means an early start, which could mean some cobwebs for the Wolverines. This is Notre Dame’s fourth prime-time game in a row, but last week’s loss at Louisville was a frustrating sign that the Irish defense simply cannot get stops. USC’s defense has allowed 40 or more points in two straight weeks, as their 34-7 lead on Colorado turned into a 48-41 white-knuckle victory, and they needed those three overtimes to stop Arizona at home. I’m not really sure why Notre Dame is favored here, because they haven’t shown the dynamic scoring ability to keep up with USC. Trojans to cover.
