NCAA Football Odds: South Carolina vs Georgia, Week 2

NCAA Football Odds: South Carolina vs Georgia, Week 3

Written by on September 15, 2023

For the fifth straight year, the South Carolina Gamecocks enter their SEC showdown with the Georgia Bulldogs as underdogs of at least three touchdowns. The Gamecocks finished 2022 with a terrific run, beating two top-ten teams down the stretch (Tennessee and Clemson). However, when these teams met last year, South Carolina came in as a 25-point home underdog and lost by 41. The Gamecocks also opened 2023 with a loss to then-#20 North Carolina. About two-thirds of the NCAAF bets on the point spread have favored Georgia, with 56% of that money on their side of the line. Can Georgia cover at home? Check out our NCAA Football Odds and prediction for this weekend’s clash.

Why should you bet on the Gamecocks?

South Carolina has a decent secondary even after losing cornerback Cam Smith, and Georgia’s passing game may be less than optimal as wide receiver Ladd McConkey will either not play at all or be limited because of a lingering back injury. Mekhi Mews leads the Bulldogs with 102 receiving yards, but without McConkey, the Bulldogs shouldn’t be able to do as much damage. This will be the first solid pass defense that Georgia quarterback Carson Beck will see this season.

Spencer Rattler has shown that he makes solid decisions at quarterback, even under pressure. In the Gamecocks’ Week 1 loss to North Carolina, Rattler spent a lot of time running for his life, but he still went 30 of 38 for 353 yards. Through two games, he has an 83 percent completion rate. The Gamecocks’ O-line just needs to do a better job protecting him and the rest of the offense; in two games, South Carolina has permitted 23 tackles for loss, the second-highest total in the nation. North Carolina sacked Rattler nine times – and they didn’t have an elite defense by any means in 2022. With better blocking, the Gamecocks should be able to sustain drives and put up points.

Why should you put your money on the Bulldogs?

Georgia has a size and strength advantage along both lines, which will not only give Carson Beck time in the pocket and open up holes for the Bulldog running backs, it will also keep South Carolina’s running game bottled up and pressure Rattler. Georgia needs to leverage this advantage; against Ball State, Georgia didn’t make it to 100 yards of rushing offense, ending a 31-game streak. Dillion Bell should get more carries after he picked up big chunks of yardage in limited activity in the first two games.

On defense, Georgia has permitted 10 points and 486 yards in two games. Of course, those wins came against Tennessee-Martin and Ball State.

The return game also showed up big for Georgia last week as Mekhi Mews returned a kickoff 42 yards and took a punt 69 yards to the house for a touchdown. Six different Bulldogs scored touchdowns as the offense moved the ball around to a lot of different hands.

Final Score and Prediction

The biggest question for the Gamecocks in this game is whether they can protect Rattler long enough to sustain drives and put up points. The answer to this question last year was “No,” which is how the Bulldogs rolled to a 48-7 win on South Carolina’s home field a year ago. The first half might end with a single-digit margin, but the Bulldogs should pull away after the intermission and cover. I predict a final score of Georgia 41, South Carolina 10.
