2023 MLB Playoffs: NLDS Game 3 Odds, Picks and Preview

Tuesday was a travel day for the four National League teams still alive in the MLB Playoffs. The Philadelphia Phillies head to Atlanta to take on the Braves after letting a 4-0 lead in Game 2 slip away, losing 5-4 to see the series go even.

Atlanta Braves at Philadelphia Phillies

It looked like the Atlanta Braves were going to drop both games in Philadelphia to start the series as the Braves went without even a base hit into the sixth inning of Game 2. However, Austin Riley and Travis d’Arnaud both hit two-run homers; D’arnaud’s blast was the team’s first extra-base hit of the Division Series. Riley’s blast came with two outs in the eighth and gave Atlanta its first lead of the series. The Phillies put Bryce Harper in the ninth, but his baserunning blunder on Nick Castellanos’ blast led to a double play to end the game. Now things head to Philadelphia for Games 3 and 4.

The Braves may be looking at a bullpen game as they look for a more solid starter in Game 4, while the Phillies roll with Aaron Nola. Nola’s season ERA was 4.46, but he hasn’t allowed more than two earned runs in a game since September 9. In his one MLB postseason start this year, he threw seven innings of three-hit shutout ball in a 7-1 trouncing of the Miami Marlins. In his last two starts of the regular season, he threw 12 ⅔ combined innings against the Braves and the Pirates, holding the teams to three runs on 10 hits, striking out 16 without a walk, so he should have the stuff to manage the Braves this time around. L.A. Dodgers at Arizona Diamondbacks

After dismantling Clayton Kershaw in the first inning of Game 1 of their NLDS, the Arizona Diamondbacks got after another Dodgers starter in Game 2, pounding Bobby Miller early and often, chasing him in the second inning of a 4-2 win. The Diamondbacks had a 10-36 record in their last 46 games at Dodger Stadium, and a 5-8 record against the Dodgers this regular season (including a five-game losing streak), but now they lead, 2-0. Closer Paul Sewald already has three saves in this postseason.

Going into Game 4, the Dodgers plan to start Lance Lynn. Lynn had a dreadful pair of starts on August 31 and September 6, giving up 15 earned runs and six home runs over nine combined innings against the Braves and the Marlins. Since then, though, he has finished six innings in three of four starts, allowing just two earned runs apiece in those three starts, and the team picked up wins against the Padres, the Tigers, and the Giants (twice). His ERA dipped from 6.09 on September 6 to 5.73 at the season’s end; while he won’t blank teams, he will keep his team in games and eat up innings.

The Diamondbacks start Brandon Pfaadt, whose first start of the postseason was disappointing. He allowed three runs on seven hits over 2 ⅔ innings in Milwaukee, but the team was able to right the ship and deliver a 6-3 win. His MLB season record (3-9, 5.72 ERA) showed a lot of inconsistency; in September, he held the Cubs and White Sox scoreless, but he gave up 12 combined runs in his other three starts, only finishing five innings once.
