The fairways at L.A. Country Club should play wide open and give an edge to players with distance off the tee, penalizing them less frequently when their drives aren’t exactly straight. If balls find the rough, the thick Bermuda grass will provide a challenge, but that might take some doing just to get there because of the width of the fairways.

This course has barrancas, which are small ravines or gulleys that are frequently full of brush or vegetation. On this course, this sort of barrier appears in multiple places to guard fairways and greens. If you hit a ball into a barranca, you could still have a clean lie, but you could also lose a ball for a penalty. This will increase the difficulty around the green quite a bit.

There are five par-3 holes in this layout – and two of them will play more than 280 yards. Of the par-4 holes, six will play over 450 yards, and the last three holes of the course all fit that description and might play more than 500 yards. Firm greens would make this a challllenge.

Matt Fitzpatrick

is the defending champion of the U.S. Open. His victory last year at Brookline came thanks to a terrific long game and some solid chipping and putting. He was second in Strokes Gained: Off the Tee and led the field in Strokes Gained: Around the Green.

Cameron Smith

will benefit from the L.A. Country Club layout, as he has underrated driving power combined with a lack of accuracy. If Smith’s driver doesn’t just fall off the table, he has the game to win here. At the PGA Championship, Smith finished T9 despite losing 2.5 strokes off the tee. Given the emphasis on driving in that tournament, that shows how strong the rest of his game well. In 2015, he finished fourth at the U.S. Open at Chambers Bay, another wide-open setup on the West Coast. At Augusta National, he has two top-five finishes – another course where you don’t really have to hit the fairway to do well. Smith also has four top-ten finishes on the LIV Tour, and he’s likely itching to show what he can do back on national television. With the value he offers, he’s an interesting pick.

Want a sleeper?

Check out Si Woo Kim. He won earlier this year at the Sony Open, and after a dry patch, he cracked the top five at both the Memorial and the AT&T Byron Nelson. At the Memorial, he had some weekend double bogies but clawed his way back to a T4 finish, gaining more than 12 strokes from tee to green over the tournament as well as 3.8 strokes around the green. He is an elite scrambler, which helps him overcome being a bit inconsistent near the green. He put up a top-five finish at Riviera four years ago, and he has the long game to compete here as well.
